Topic tags/keywords: humor off topic garden critters

I may have mentioned that I feed squirrels year round at my house and each year I end up with a new batch of friends.
Oscar is a little male from a februray whelping. He was very shy like his mother and did not hand feed until about 3 weeks ago. His bigger sister is still timid and just today took food from my hand.
I feed another female that nests in my tool shed and she has two babies that are going thru juvenile and driving her crazy.

He’s so cute!
Mama Fuzzy won’t bring her littles around to be fed :(
But she and Buddy (an adult male) and Stubby (one of last year’s young’uns who lost 1/2 his tail last year)
are here daily. They are all still too shy to handfeed, although they will feed on the deck rail with us down in the yard.
They also planted a pretty impressive peanut crop this year. I kept count the other day and pulled 14 different peanut plants out of the fence bed!

They enjoy sunflower seeds and It helps them keep thier incisors from over growing. I try to namge a few hard materials into the diet. The will take watermellon, strawberry and raisins readily. WhenI give them peanut butter I crush some calcium into the mix of peanuts, peanut butter.
They will also haul away the odd small piece of bone and that help with the calcium.
I would not do this except for messing around with their regualr diet by feeding them.

With all the cats running loose in my neighborhood, I’ll never get our fuzzy’s that tame.
The only feed I give them is raw peanuts, dried corn, and sunflower seeds still in the shell. And the occasional apple bits.

Dini , I have two neightbourhood cats that prowl around my yard.
I feed them too and they go home.
Well that’s not quite true. “kisses” likes to hang aound and rub himself on my legs when I’m working. He drive the squirrels frantic and I think he knows it .

I like that idea with just plain sunflower seeds, rather than shelled, must be alot easier for the little ones!

Just had to look again, you really have them on a great diet, hats off!

I have one that will climb the portch, but then he shys again, I keep trying though!

GN:
They will respond to the same sound repeated over and over in a low steady voice.
One of my faves is ”come and see!”

If you get their attention with this or similar hold your food treat out in your open hand so they can see it, then put it down near you where they can pick it up.
Gradually decrease the distance between you and the food and you will have them hand feeding in no time.
Because their eyes are so far back on the sides of their heads you may get the odd gentle nip from them while they figure out which is you and which is food.
Just stay steady and they will get it figured out pretty quickly.
For some reason this little fellow like to nibble at my fingers when he takes his treats.
It almost seems like he is trying to be affectionate.
He often holds my fingers with his paws when he takes his treat too.

Good luck

What I say is kinda like tsk tsk tsk, but different, its get their attention, but will try again with this one and see what happens, perhaps because they are city squirrels and they are always on the look out for predators.

With our raccoon friends we did the say, they came alot quicker and it didn’t take them long to feed out of our hands, with their paw resting on my hand, so close, you just wanted to reach out and pat them, but never did, they knew they had my trust.

tomorrow will be a new day for my little squirrel friend, funny though, just haven’t seen any wee ones, your are soooooooo lucky to see them that small.

thanks for the advice!
