Topic tags/keywords: resource question mosquitoes repellent tip

We are almost being kept prisonners in the house by mosquitoes. They are sooo bad, even the dogs will not stay outside!
Yesterday i got this email from a family member saying that they had tried Listerine mouth wash as a repellent!
So I figured I did not have anything to loose and this morning gave it a try!
I sprayed all my window screens, patio door with Listerine and the concentration of mosquitoes on the windows seemed to have decreased!

Anybody know why this would work?

Everybody hates the smell of Listerine. <vbg>
When I lived up north and had dogs I used oil of wintergreen with deet in it.
We got the deet free from the military base at the time.
I think it had Methyl salicylate in it ( oil of winter green)

I just put it on their dog brush and combed it on their fur. Not a whole bunch but enough to smell it.
... it only helped.

Probably the mint. I use Dr. Broners peppermint soap, this is great to deter flies. Back in the days when I used smelly detergents, purfumes, hairsprays and the like, I would be eaten alive! Wash your clothes and yourself (hair too…dogs as well) in the Dr. Broners peppermint soap and it will reduce the population surrounding you incredibly! I find that the area of my lawn under my clothes line where I frequently use the soap to wash mats and hose them off on the line, the grass is lush, thick and green, even though this is the dogs potty area so it has other uses in the garden as well.

XP, maybe it just the washing that helps. <g> – just kidding!

Seriously, the pests are attracted to animal odours and CO2 from your breath.
Maybe chewing gum could help.

Listerine does work, and it doesn’t wear off as fast as Off does.
