Topic tags/keywords: finches sparrow birds nest robins robins eggs

I am not sure but I believe this is the White-Throated Sparrow!

The little kind of green one at the bottom of the left feeder is a female finch! And the males are trying to get her attention but she is really ignoring them all:

And this is what happens almost every time:

Yup.. That’s a White-Throated Sparrow.. I’m jealous of all your gold finches.. sniff I haven’t been able to attract many..

I’m going to do away with the large feeder I have and get a few tube feeders like that, figure it’ll do better and last longer.

What kind of feed do you have in them?

Scott:
At this time of the year, it is the regular finch mix but later on it will be the thistles.

We should see the house finch soon as well as the purple ones. Got great pictures last year!!

awesome photos everyone!

I put niger seed in our “upside down” finch feeder. It lasts longer that way.

I have tried several types of bird seed. One thing for sure is that once the finch seed gets wet, they wont eat it but they do love niger seed, a tad expensive and once it gets wet from the rain it tends to go moldy and its wasted.

For the past while I have used just sunflower seeds and I have found that almost all the birds eat it, including the finches.

Nice photos

Beautiful pics ‘E’. So fortunate to have such a variety. Love the blue of the robins’ eggs. Mother Nature sure is amazing. You take wonderful shots!

I only use black oil sunflowers seeds for all the birds. I found out if you use all niger they get fussy and they won’t eat anything else. That corn mix is for doves but I found the stuff in a feeders when it gets wet, horrible stuff. So much starch so it plugs up the feeders and very difficult to clean and will go moldy

The others seeds like niger are too expensive for me

The bird shop here, Birds and Blooms told me niger seed is very sweet and just like candy to them

In fact I think he said it wasn’t even real seed

As I was walking by the wood shed, I peeked and saw a parent sitting on the side of the nest:

It flew away as I was taking the picture. So I decided to give a try at the nest itself and this is what I got:

At that point both parents were quite upset with me so I left.
