I’m in Winnipeg, grew up in New Hampshire, I wish somebody would invent a sugar maple hardy in zone 2!!

I’m still not seeing the temperature ranges that the lucky Yankees have!
Also no listing of suggested plants.

Eklectic…since you took it upon yourself to answer for the guy, I say this to you:

If someone is posting stuff and talking about plants and all that, I’ll like to flippin know where all the talk is coming from and how it applies to ME!

Am only talking about me here, you can do as you wish! If they can’t be bothered to mention this in their posts, and assume everyone is where they are, then I say don’t bother, and I am sticking by this. It’s not the law, but it sure makes a whole lot of sense.

the Canadian Zone stuff takes in more information than the US zone chart… what factors? I don’t know.. I just know that it is different and the Canadian one uses more data…

I just saw the local news rag had a new map the other day. My area is on the boundary now of being the same or moving up one from 5 to 6. Youse canucks should be in florida type weather in about a few years here, eh?

Yes, even thought this winter has been bad, the last few years we have had “green Christmas”, and snow only for a few months!
It is definitely changing!

I read that if the poles were to melt that the ocean levels would increase about 20 feet.
That would put many of the port cities under water and doubltess the increased water mass could fill up the praire basins again with rain water.

Gawd, help me I’m starting to sound like Al Gore and David Suzuki combined! Arrrrrgh!

Eklectic, I agree that lately we seem to be having erratic seasons. What I can’t find out is if this is part of a longer term cycle and how much of it is attributable to greenhouse gases and what part is attributable to over harvesting and over population.
The two opposing camps are so firmly entrenched that the data is suffering.

And… we have to know soon.

It doesn’t matter who you sound like: as long as we are aware of what is going on and that each one of us does his/her part as well as “reminding” those who seem to forget about it, we might still make a difference.

regardless of what the biggest cause is, we still have to take responsibility for our actions…
we need trees; fact. .. save the trees.
we need clean water. Fact. .. don’t pollute the water
we need clean air. Fact.. don’t pollute the air.

and so our actions should support the above three vital “needs”.
I listened to an interview with David Suzuki once and he said, that at the end of the day (his death bed) his grandchildren can say “well at least Grandpa tried to make a difference”.

and so I’m planting more garden this year—more homegrown food and less transported foods needed.

how many use a wood stove for heat?........did you know that a wood stove produces more carbon in a face cord, then a new compact car produces, if the car ran 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for a whole year. Folks say a wood stove is carbon neutral because we can plant another tree….....but we dont plant another tree.

Some of hype…......The orbit of our planet is getting tighter and tighter to the sun, which means we going to get a little hotter, whether we like it or not.

......this topic depresses me. My wife is a teacher and there is nothing in the schools ciriculam ? that teaches global warming, starvation, desertification…...nothing. On the TV we see nothing but ads, ads to buy this and that, to play hockey, to figure skate, to travel, to drive and drive and drive and drive. We tell other countries to stop cutting trees yet we cut most of our own down. We dont like the deforestation going on in tropical rain forests yet we barg about the fancy exotic pens we make, the exotic venners in this kitchen and that dining table. We like to think that re-cycling is majic but we never think about the amount of energy we suck from the planet to re-cycle. like the garbage trucks that pick it up, the big machinery used to move it around,the equipment needed to sort it, the vehicles needed to transport it….......?. Is it worth it or is it a method to make us think we are doing the right thing…...........I just dont know.

In my neck of the woods we have the great lakes to which the newer auto factories like Honda have huge gigantic pipelines that scoop the water up from lake Huron never to return and then we wonder why the lakes are dropping. We populate areas like Arizona, we choke the Colarado river, yet cities like Detroit, Cleveland, Windsor, Buffalo are starving for jobs yet surrounded by water.

None of it makes sense to me so I plant trees, lots of trees.

Consumer waste is at an all time high and rising.
Low flush toilets… I don’t think so.

Oddly, I have a friend who claimed to have worked for Suziki and had suggested that not only does he fly first class but had often purchased the seat next to him for his laptop.

for the past few years I have planted at least 2 trees a year in my yard for a total of 13 new trees)
I use only the clothesline from spring to fall but use my clothes dryer in the winter. I confess.
Last time I was in an airplane was in 1976 when a friend and I went to Europe after graduation from highschool.
I own a pick-up truck but rarely (if ever) have the air conditioner on in it and I always multi-task trips so I’m not driving to the store for a single item etc.
I don’t have air conditioning in my house, other than open windows and some ceiling fans which I do use on occasion
We use wood for our bonfire breakfasts and have reduced our monthly heating bill by about $200 by installing the propane fireplace in the house (and using it of course)

and I hope I remember to turn my hydro off on Saturday night – it will be exciting to see the effect it has from the view from space. Do we get to see that?

When I fly I see a milky way stretching from Toronto to NewYork that is solid electrically produced light.
When I drive here at night I see just about every high rise office tower lit up on every floor.
When I drive to work I see just aout every car here is a huge SUV or Pickup truck with at most two passengers.
My government does not use hybrid cars or economy cars for their employees nor do the offer any incentive for me to do so.
Today I filled up my vehicle with gas and the federal and provincial taxes on the product were…on average 35% of the pump price .
Yeah, like they are going to give that cash cow up like tobacco!

I use the clothesline from spring to fall and usually I use my drying racks in the winter except for this last winter because of ongoing renovation.
Air conditioning I use both at home and in the car for health reason, but according to some people, I should use it more. Never used to use it at all until my health demanded it.
For mulching, I use cardboard and newspaper, mine, neighbors and if I sill need more, I go to the corner store.
Heat is wood as this is the alternative to oil around here:used less than half a tank of oil in the last 5 years.
When going shopping, I organize it so as to do a lot in one trip and other wise, hubby will stop on his way home.

We probably will see it on the news?!

I agree Bob… it’s like the “kids shouldn’t smoke but we won’t make that illegal” (drinking under age in illegal but not smoking.. interesting $$$$$)

but in the end – it’s all up to “me”. Only “I” can change the world and I, for one, am working hard at it.

One more thing I do, when using paper towel, put them in the compost unless you use chemical cleaners.

I agree with Bob. Nothing will change until we stop the powerful lobby groups from being able to influence our elected officials through finacial contributions.

I have nothing against any country, race creed or colour. It is my belief that if I can afford a vehicle, a microwave, a dryer and on and on, that every person on this planet should have the opportunity for the same privilages. That said…....you wanna belive that those who dont have what we have….......want those privilages too and just two examples of countries that want it really bad….......India and China.

I read that China opens a new coal fired electrical generating station….....every single day. Boycotting fuel prices is useless because China and India are buying up fuel reserves at every chance they can. The amount of persoanl freedom the chinese have, is thankfully, growing. The personal wealth of chinese citizens is growing exponentially (again thankfully). When the average Chinese and Indian citizen can afford to buy a car, a microwave, and turn on a light…........look out. What we have grown accustomed to as “our way of life” will cease to exist.

it is only my opinion that I express but most folks dont like to talk about it, they dont like to read about it, perhaps thinking that if we ignore the problem long enough, the problem will just go away but nothing could be further from the truth. Sadly, the path western societies have chosen to take is suicide…......pushing consumerism on countries just doesnt work. Western thinking hasnt made Africa a great place to live, not with Central America and I doubt the polar bears are gonna thank us any time soon.

It’s also my opinion that some countries have learned a great lesson from President Reagen. He made the Berlin wall crumble, he put an end to the Soviet Union with one simple move….......spend them into the ground and so he took the reins of the cold war and the arms race and built war planes, war ships, air craft carriers and he just pumped up the miliatry spending and it worked. The Soviet Union went bankrupt. Its socialist economy just didnt have a chance.

Some countries must have seen that but they changed one thing. Instead of trying to out spend the other guy, they chose to let the other country spend themselves into the ground. Just look at any Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Rona parking lot and its full. Full of people buying everything and anything. The consequences of having everything made “off shore” will become severe as time goes on. Legacy costs carried by companies here….......are moving and the only one left to pick up these costs…......are you and me.

We are presently mining this earth to death. It is absolutly impossible to sustain this rate, this unprecedented rate of what I call “Earth Rape”. I know one thing for sure though. That this giant space ship we all travel on called earth…...........we still be here well after we’re are all gone.

Mike they seem to have broken up the climates into roughly 8-10° zones for an index of suitability for growth of trees, shrubs and flowers. It is calculated for all the areas in the country, using an equation that integrates climatic data from the 1930 to 1990 period. The climatic data used to calculate the index are the minimum winter temperatures, the length of the frost-free period, summer rainfall, summer maximum temperatures, snow cover, January rainfall and the maximum wind speed. Elevation data were also taken into account because of its direct effect on temperature and precipitation. Data are derived from a 2 kilometre by 2 kilometre grid.

With that said, the data is 18 years out of date and virtually meaningless with the changes occuring today.

I’m speaking for Canada now.
The Americans have a slightly different model to point to the same variables.
It’s again as accurate as the actual weather they try to guestimate.

Here in Canada we used to rely on the Farmer's Almanac that was pretty much accurate to a week or two. I haven’t seen the publication for some years now and just rely on my arthritis to let me know when it’s likely to rain. This one is the original I think.

Mike I didn’t make the system.
If I had my way, politicians and bureaucrats would be shot a birth.

On the other hand it would be nice to know if a plant could stand a chance of surviving a season here before plunking down my cash.
As it stands now, our “Hybrid roses” for instance are grown down in Washington/Oregon states and few if any make it thru the winters here.
The government does buggar all to check the hardiness claims of these products.
That makes the entire process a farce.
