For Father’s Day my wife and son gave me something I have always wanted…2 Japanese Maples. Instead of planting them in the ground, I would like to plant them in large planter boxes. My other hobby (besides gardening) is woodworking so I have a complete woodshop and lots of hardwood lumber. The only thing I need is some help with the design. I want to buils a planter for each tree. They ar pretty small right now, only about 3 feet tall, but I want to make the boxes large enough for the next several years. I was thinking it would be cool to make something with an Aisian accent??? Any ideas, pictures, links or plans would be greatly appreciated!!!

I am not sure where you live, so it makes it more difficult to suggest a design. Please remember that japanese maples, while they are beautiful, are indeed somewhat demanding as to what they will tolerate. You will have to research their grow zone tolerance, and also bear in mind the fact that they can be sensitive to wind in the winter. Be sure to give them lots of root room, as well. They can grow to a substantial size, so think about the dripline area as a potential size of the raised garden you wish to develop.

are you going to re-plant them in the ground when they get bigger….

as jroot said, they are not to be in the wind or full sun as it will burn the leaves.

if you send me, or at least post a “pic”...................of that tree

I sometimes think that if you live in BC Vancouver, Vancouver Island, Pelee Island, Leamington, Windsor that the best way to grow those trees….........is in a “box”!

I no longer grow mine, in…..................... the ground
