Hi,
I am looking to buy a small chipper shredder for my home garden, something not more than $300.00
I am willing to pay more than this one but its the only pic to give you an idea.

Any suggestions? I just need it to clean up and add mulch around the garden.
Thanks

Its been my experience that any chipper that can’t be towed behind a tuck is nearly useless.

If it chips limbs good it doesn’t work well for leaves. Works good for leaves chipping limbs doesn’t work.

They always exaggerate how big a limb you can chip.

If you have lots of leaves you might want to look at a blower/vacume. blower shredder When run in vacume mode they shread the leaves.

Do not put wood chips in your garden unless it has been fully composted and you know it is safe to use. Some wood chips will kill your plants. Wood chips are also a great home for fungus and attractive to termites. There are lots of reasons you don’t want to do this.

From Gardens Alive
Never use wood or bark to mulch your plants; it can suck food right out of their soil, prevent water from reaching their roots and rot the bark if the mulch actually touches the plant. You can safely use wood mulches to keep weeds down in your garden paths; that’s it. And what about {quote} “landscape mulch”? Every time we warn that wood and bark mulches breed a fungus that irrevocably stains homes and cars, we get a flood of emails saying, “we always hear you say not to use wood mulches, and now the side of our house is covered with little black dots; that’s not because of our wood mulch, is it?” For lots more mulching info, see this

Rosewood, I note that you are from zone 6. Are you in Canada or the US? I ask that because I happen to have that same McCulloch chipper / shredder in my garage, and I don’t use it very often, and have thought about selling it. I used mine to grind up garden refuse, to make composting more efficient.

If you are in Canada, and in southern Ontario, give me a private email or message and we can “chat”.

Works fine. I just don’t use it that often. I have a big compost pile in the bush, where I just toss the cuttings without cutting them up. I originally saw it with a Dutch farmer, who ground up the tulip bulbs to make compost for the new crop, and thought it was a neat idea. I guess I am too lazy ( or pressed for time ) to haul it out of the garage, and grind up the stocks. I have done so a few times, ... but alas, ... there it sits.
