Topic tags/keywords: pergola arbor design

According to Wikipedia, a PERGOLA is: “a garden feature forming a shaded walk or passageway of pillars that support cross beams and a sturdy open lattice, upon which woody vines are trained.”

And an ARBOR is a shaded sitting place, e.g. in a garden

(This question was asked over in LumberJocks and I thought that this would be the perfect place to discuss the difference.)

Interesting…my understanding has always been just the opposite of Wiki’s opinion…

I still call them arbors if you can walk through them . You can always pull up a chair and sit under them. lol

Size is probably the most determining factor. A pergola will typically encompass an entire functional space, such as a patio, while an arbor is more of a stand-alone structure designed to support a specific plant such as any climber or grape or wisteria or whatever.

This is what I would consider an arbor for my grapes.

You can walk thru it, you could sit there even there is no seat. But, I built it specifically for the grape and it’s not all that big.

Ek…yeah…I grab anything metal that I think I can weld and just keep it in a pile until it becomes something. ‘Cept I did buy the rebar…it’s hard to find free full length unsed rebar. I’m going to add to it this summer. Got some additional ideas. But nothing else decorative yet to share.

And bullseye has a pergola. bigger, have a party under it, etc. I always like wisteria on a pergola.

I so want to learn how to weld!!
Would also be handy with my concrete sculptures, rather than “tying” the rebars together!!!
