Topic tags/keywords: lettuce babies green house

Well, earlier I posted photos of my homemade greenhouse that I grow cold crops in such as Arugula, Bokchoy, Mustard Greens, Carrots, etc. http://gardentenders.com/members/mmh/blog/803. The crops have done quite well, but many are bolting now due to being started last Fall and with summer like tempuratures early on. I managed to set in a new crop of lettuce before having a scheduled knee surgery last month. I even harvested mustard greens in anticipation of the time I’d have to be prone and unable to work in the garden.

Now I’m in trouble. The cute tiny lettuce babies have matured and were sown in broadcast technique for mesclum cuttings. I tried thinning some out earlier before my “situtation”, but now they are bursting at the seems. They want OUT! I will have to hobble in there and try to harvest them before they completely revolt and start tearing down the structure.

Not to mention that all of the Arugula, Mustard Greens have blossomed and are going to set seed quickly. I can use the seed, but the place is waist high in flora now.

I will try to write an update if I am not wrangled down among them and taken hostage.

Sounds like quite the predicament you’re in. If you’ve got a crutch or cane, I recommend keeping it close to you as it can be used as a weapon.

Good luck calming the unwashed masses. ;)

take your cell phone with you so you can call for help!!

and take some salad dressing in with you—that might be a good threat and keep the plants under control!!

HOSTAGE UPDATE:

I have just been released after hours of serious negotiations between the Rebelous Lettuce Babies and my husband and his trusty Weed Wacker. I went out to the greenhouse the other day to try and harvest some lettuce and thin them out just enough to allow the others to grow and when I turned around they wrestled me to the ground, knocking me over my “Scoot-n-Doo” and the Arugula then proceeded to hog tie me around my ankles and wrists.

I yelled for HELP but my husband didn’t hear me, as he was indoors taking a nap. 5 hours later he came looking for me, as the cats were whining and he was hungry. The slugs were starting to suckle my earlobes and I was getting desperate! The Rebelous Lettuce Babies demanded better thinning practices and more room to leaf out freely. They demanded weekly doses of liquid seaweed spray and more movie nights with late curfews. My husband was besides himself. He was hungry and his wife was tied up in the greenhouse with the Arugula. What to do???

Being the smart, country raised, college educated fellow he is, he grabbed the weed wacker, turned it on HIGH and yelled “LET MY WIFE GO YOU NASTY GREEN VITTLES!”

The up-roar was suddenly silenced. The Rebelous Lettuce Babies cringed. Their little leaves were shaking as they contemplated their fate at the end of a plastic green weed wacker string. They sighed and then meekly moaned to the Arugula “Let her go.”

My wrists and ankles were suddenly free. I slipped out of the tangle of greens and hurried to my husband’s side. He held me in his arms tight as I cried of relief. The slugs where slapped off my earlobes (yuck) and he guided me indoors. My horrible hostage ordeal was over.

Once inside, I washed my hands, fed the cat, and started dinner.

It’s good to be missed.

that reminds me when I went for walk back to the pond and low and behold a spring peeper frog said to me

“If you kiss me I will turn into the princess of your dreams, dedicated to you and all your desires for the rest of your life,....yes, the woman every man wants to have”

I put the frog in my pocket

A few yards later the frog in my pocket asked “Well Mr…...........arent you going to kiss me”!!!!

“Nah….............at my age, I’ld rather have a talking frog”

Well, I’ve been eating some of the lettuce babies and now it’s time to go back into the greenhouse to harvest more. My husband is away on a trip, so if the Arugula hog tie me down again, there is no one but my cats to rescue me. Chances of a rescue from them are slim, unless, maybe I rub fresh catnip all over me and tuck some between my toes.

I best unlock the garden gates and take my phone to call 911 so the police can come rescue me.

Anyone for salad? Extra protein (critters) provided.
