Its been a very busy summer with no end in sight. This is the first summer in 40 years that I have not made it to the cottage…....booo whooo. On the good side I have now fixed the driveway by laying three tandem wheeled dump trucks full of crushed limestone, I put crushed limestone on the floor of the shed part of the barn (that sand was a &%^$# to walk on). I finished the chicken coop complete with insulation and electricity.

I put in a solar pool heater (not quite complete). Bought an upright freezer. Finished the powder room with 5’ high double panelled cherry wainscoting.

The FIL toasted the old fergonson T30 so he went and bought the oldest greasy International that I was told I wasnt allowed to drive

So I bought my own. A 2 cylinder deisel Kubota with a bucket ( needs a little work). Then I was told that I couldnt cut the fields with his mower so I went and bought my own. A 5’ wide tow behind finishing mower and yesterday I cut the grass in an 1 1/2 hours instead of 5 hours with that piece of crap rido mower.

I also picked up a Rhino post hole digger so that this fall, perhaps next spring I can start putting in my horse fencing. The neighbor down the road has a big beauiful horse farm and told me that if I fence a field he will drop by 4 or 5 horses to graze in it and then pick them up in the fall…..........aint that cool, free horses and no invoices aside for the fence. They want 25 bucks to dig a hole for a fence post. I need several huindred holes so…........I got my own digger.

I best get back to work

You have been a really busy person, but it appears to be paying off. Well done.

$25 to dig a hole? Wow. I think I would be buying my own as well. Then I could rent my services out to others for $20-$25 a hole depending upon the soil and time needed. Good thinking, greenthumb.

I was hand shovelling the crushed limestone into a wheel barrel and then walking load after load into the shed….......got the bucket on the Kubota and it was done in 20 minutes and my back felt great too

Gotta love hydraulics

ouch re: no cottage this year :(
I didn’t use our pool much this year and that was disappointing. (Too many thunderstorms and cool weather)

Solar powered pool heater. That’s what Rick wants to do—this year we sure could have used it!

Congrats re: the tractors. My brother has a “small” tractor with all the tools for it and he loves it. Sure does make the jobs go a lot faster.

Man, oh man … you have been one “busy boy”!!!! Sure glad you got those two tractors and all the tools that go with them. I can only imagine how much easier they make your life!!! You have got quite a place there to upkeep.

The horses sound WONDERFUL!!!!! How cool is that. I used to love to ride when I was younger. Horses would definitely make installing a fence worthwhile.

And that Cherry wainscoting sounds GORGEOUS. Your work is so awesome … any pics???

Don’t wear yourself out and remember to to give your FIL a big “wave” and smile as you ride by on your new tractor!! (vbg)

Busy Busy Bee!
And aren’t lucky to have a FIL that gave you the opportunity to buy tools that work the way “you” want!
So down from 5 hours to 1 1/2!! More time for other stuff! Sounds to me that you do need the extra time with all the projects !

If people here want the lifestlye they so enjoy then for me, there is no option other then work. Thankfully I love the work I do so for the most part it’s like being back in Kindergarden but instead of a box of crayons I get big fancy tools to create what comes out of another persons imagination. That and I know for sure that winter will be upon us again and here one needs a big toy to deal with the snow,

No pics…..............sorry, perhaps when time permits

The solar powered pool heater was on sale and the MIL paid for it. It’s “supposed” to raise the temperture 10 degrees C above normal which really means you get an additional 2 months of use. It’s probaably on sale due to its size being four panels that measure 2’ x 20’. FIL thinks it should go on the roof of the poolhouse and just leave 4’ hanging over the edge of the fascia or put it on the house roof which requires extensive digging for plumbing…..........not happening.

I remain convinced that my FIL is “nuts”

I have built this man a “custom trailer” for him and his wifes trip south to thier Floirida home, where they go every winter, where he compliains he’s “bored” which mimics his grandchildren who claim the same thing when they wake up at noon? For two or three years I did nothing other then try and make that idiot happy. Nothing worked and to this day he is a miserable SOB.

I fed his pigeons too. For three winters I fed his pigeons while he whinned like stuck cat sweating in that hot sun down Miame way, and complianing cause he’s bored while the snow piled down, while that tractor I had to dig out of the snow and “start” the 1952er and plow a lane down to his self propagating vermon and be damned if the whole thing didnt show mecy in that I could have left the whole mess to burn….......but I didnt

You ask yourself if you love pigeons and then turn around and ask yourself again if you want 5,000 of them?

Digest that and add tonnes and tonnes of snow before you’ve even started a snow blower?......and the look at the “path” to the pgeons…............and know the whole time that you dont own them and its winter and????

I can only say this….....................he’s some lucky he has me as a SIL

Now add ponds?........start with one scarey one, add another scarey one and then add a third that literally parralizes you on first sight of excavating machine? and then heat them all winter &%$#@& long becuase there is a 2 cent fish in it that reproduces itself as fast as the pigeons do.

If that recipe isnt complecated enough add ducks…................and then add a sign that says we got ducks for sale and then leave. .......................I might add we are talking a lot of ducks and the sign reads “DEAD or Alive” or at least that what I read when I see “Live” like still quacking, or “Dressed” ready for the oven?.......no price per bird, no &^%$#@ bags for the live bird I’m going to do what with?............its simply unbelievable that people leave with this kinda )&%it on my lap?................because the ^%$#@& sign says live or dressed and last I looked they were all allive so what am I supposed to do when some one says I want it dressed?

I do love my old tractor

“why you’re here … you seem to hate it”??? Are you saying he hates being here on GT? What am I missing with this question. Cuz that is not what I am getting from Greenthumb. I am getting that he feels comfortable enough with us as a group to “vent” about some issues within his life. I think (and truly hope) Greenthumb knows that we support him and value him as a member here. But maybe I am going on for nothing … cuz I must be missing something here. Don’t get it …

Bob

they head to Florida for almost 6 months and its heavenly. they also leave on trips and the cottage for a month or so.

There are times when I would just love to pack up and leave but

I have too much invested here. Now I have my tractor and am ready for winter, I have a few beautiful gardens, having a ball with my chickens and work has never been better so when I weigh out the pros and cons…............the pros win. Soon I will put stairs from the main floor to the loft of the barn…........and that too will be just lovely as the view from the loft of the barn takes in rolling country side, the lights of nearest city and a view of the lake….............nice place for an office, carving, painting etc and it will surely be a nice project.

Cheers

So, a small price to pay for an opportunity to have a better life then?

I am constantly surrounded by those who in fact, have a WAY better lifestyle then I have and am quite OK with that. ..............because they pay my bills.

having done a wee bit of travelling in my life, it’s easy to keep a perspective in that I have a great life because I am not in a Columbian prison, nor do I tweek a living out of a garbage dump, pick coffee beans in an insect and snake infested mountain, or hack down sugar cane. I dont have to lock my doors at night (thanks to 4 dogs), I have a flush toilet (five of them) hot water, heat…..........pretty good really.

I also have two daughters, successful in thier own right and am quite proud of the fact that they are where they are, because of my influence on when they were kids.

Yes, I occasionally vent. yes I am not fond of my FIL. Yes my step kids are lazy, self centered, spoiled but they do make me laugh on occasion.

I love my gardens, my dogs, my spouse….......and on and on.

I just won a contract where I tend to say this a lot. “If this was my home, my kitchen, and money was not a concern, then this is what I would do”.................and hear this a lot “This is why we hired you!!!!!”

Having so many tidbits of age old wisdom and one of my favorites is by Mr. Ralph Waldo Emerson which reads

“The definition of success—To laugh much; to win respect of intelligent persons and the affections of children; to earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give one’s self; to leave the world a little better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition.; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm, and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived—this is to have succeeded.”

My guess is that I have achieved this on all fronts.

As for my FIL…...........he is loved by his daughter and his gandchildren and I respect that but he’s bit of a bully and not being a fan of bullies he now realizing that it doesnt work with me, that I march to the beat of my own drum, not his and slowly but surely, I get his respect.

That said…................I best go make some dust.

This is so well said!
Yes you can vent! I do envy that you are able to do it! And so creatively!
And it is so nice to see that you are able to see the blessings in your life and talk about them!

Again, well said! :-)

I had to go through the “success” definition: let’s see… check, check, check, check, check, check, check (I hope), check, check, and check..
Yes, I, too feel that I am achieving this!

Thanks for the quote.

Yes, well said Greenthumb … maybe we should all be more like you … venting and getting issues off our chests, remember our many blessings and the loves in our lives and get on with living. I sometimes forget that people are really okay while venting and it can be a healthy “exercise”.

I have a hard time watching people I care about “vent” cuz all I see is the hurt .. and then I so desperately want to fix “it”. Been a difficult lesson I am learning with my adult children (and one I have not totally mastered yet, I must admit) ... watching them go through life, struggling with different issues and being okay when they call mom just to “vent”.

GrandmaT…....my youngest daughter calls for two reasons. For a shoulder to cry on or to make me proud by one of yet, another achievements.

It would appear I have big shoulders because just about every one I know uses them to cry on.

And, THEY ARE my biggest achievement!!!
