MY NEIGHBOUR HAS A VICTORIA PLUM TREE FOR WHICH HE HAS NO INTEREST, AFTER A SHORT DISCUSSION I WAS ROUND THERE AND PICKED ABOUT 20 LBS OF PLUMS. I THEN STUDIED THE COOK BOOKS AND DECIDED I WOULD MAKE PLUM CHUTNEY AND PLUM JAM, THIS WAS AFTER PICKING OVER THE PLUMS TO SORT OUT THE BEST ONES FOR THE FRUIT BOWL.
HERE WE HAVE THE JAM IN THE BIG PAN AND CHUTNEY IN THE SMALLER ONE NOTE THE SUGAR THERMOMETER IN THE JAM TO NOTE THE SETTING POINT.

COOKING JAM & CHUTNEY

I USED THIS COMPOSURE TO TAKE THE PICTURE FOR MY LABEL
a href=”http://s247.photobucket.com/albums/gg137/miketheglass/?action=view&current=plumorange1.jpg” target=”_blank”>SUBJECT FOR JAM LABEL

THIS IS A CLOSE UP OF A LABEL

JAM LABEL

MY GRANDAUGHTER LOVED PUTTING ON THE LABELS ON ALL 21 JARS

21X12 OZ. JARS PLUM & ORANGE JAM

THIS RECIPE HAS A LOT OF ORANGE FLESH AND ZEST WHICH GIVES IT A LOVELY TANGY FLAVOUR IT WILL BE GREAT FOR BREAKFAST AS A CHANGE TO MARMALADE. TOMORROW MY NEIGHBOUR WILL GET BACK SOME OF HIS PLUMS IN JAM AND CHUTNEY.

REGARDS MIKE

Good stuff. I have had plum jam, but I don’t think I’ve had plum chutney. Are you willing to share a recipe?

Awww… Now.. Getting all fancy isn’t fair.

Oh well, I got you beat on quantity. We’ve got.. Hurm.. Rough guess, 150 quarts of apple sauce and tomato product down stairs.. Then there’s who knows how many jars of jellies, plus salsa.

It’s an addiction. :)

Lulu, this place might work for you.

I always recommend trying to source the jars local however unless you’re buying in bulk to offset the shipping costs. I stick with as cheap as I can get though, personally. So Big Lots jars are fine with me… Plus they include lids and rings. :)

What kind of pepper jelly are you making? Hot or standard, sweet or tart?

I did a round of sweet hot pepper jelly and everyone loved it.. Well, those who liked hot stuff.

THOSE SQUARE JARS LOOK GOOD ,THEY WOULD BE GREAT FOR YOUR OWN LABELS . THE JARS SUPPLIED BY THE FIRM SCOTT SHOWED ARE VERY GOOD WHAT A SELECTION.
I AM ALWAYS CONFUSED WHEN PEOPLE FROM AMERICA AND CANADA REFER TO CANNING WHICH TO ME MEANS A METAL CONTAINER , IN ENGLAND WE WOULD SAY PRESERVING OR PICKLING., THATS ONE OF THE THINGS TYHAT MAKES GT SO INTERESTING .

Mike, my very loved Grandfather used to make Plum jam … Grandpa’s jam was not too sweet. Man does that bring back memories and a hankering for some of his delicious jam. Sadly, the recipe was not passed down. Always was a special treat to have a thick slice of grandma’s home-made bread, a bit of butter and then Grandpa’s plum jam. Those were the days …

Thanks for the smiles this morning as your thread brought back some very dear times … :-)

I love your labels and jars, by the way!!! You are a man of many talents …
