Topic tags/keywords: question heirloom

I have some tomatoes that have split. I don’t know what kind they are, A friend gave me an envelope of seeds marked “heritage tomatoes”.

Anyone know why they would split like this? It’s just these 3. None of the others on about a dozen plants have this.

HI

They split for lack of water is what I have been told but if your weather was anything like ours that wouldn’t be the reason

This is the 22nd straight day of pouring down heavy rain

Plus every 2nd day bad thunder/lightening storms which I am terrified of I got some sleep last nite for a change, But now todays temps was 16C

Loose one home by lightening strikes can making any one a bir scared.

Never was before that

I have a terrific tom and cuke crop this year but tossing this up to so much rain

This bunch of toms are now 3 times this size.

I wish they would ripen tho. We;ve had no sun in 22 days and todays temp is 17C. Woke up to a bit of ice on some water on a dish on the deck

Its not so much so due to a lack of water but rather irregular water. If your tomatoes have gone through a dry spell and you try to make up for it with frequent or heavy waterings/rain, the inside of the tomato will plump up faster than the outside can stretch and grow. As a result the outer skin of the tomato splits open or cracks. Tomatoes need to get regular daily water. They are still perfectly fine to eat with cracks.

makes sense! thanks

I always thought it was from over-watering, hence the tomato fills up with liquid and bursts.

Thanks guys. This makes sense. We normally water every day unless it rains. But we went away for 2 weeks in July and then started watering again when we got back. I understand it didn’t rain much here while we were gone. Odd that this only happened to these 3 though.

Bunting: you should be OK if you put up a few lightning rods with adequate grounding. I did some research on this when a client asked me to install some on his house. They are very effective if installed properly. One grounding stake is enough in normally wet ground but you may need 3-5 rods on each cable if the ground is dry, ie: you live on a hill. You can’t rely on the rain to make the ground wet enough.
