I started growing potatoes in piles of grass clippings. They were growing like weeds, for a while. A couple days ago they started wilting. I dug down and found the stems seem to be rotting. Anybody here know what’s going on?

Maybe kept too warm and wet by the grass?

Or if the grass went moldy that will do it

Mine are not doing well either. I planted them late July 1st weekend

I was runningg out of soil to hill them

I was told to use straw and I did but they are not growing. I never eheard of using grass or straw before. I hope that isn’t the reeason mine are doing nothing

My poatatoes are the size of littl marbles when I looked a week ago

I figure that the grass is decomposing. Any action like that will surely spread to the potato plants.

I have heard of using grass as a mulch, but not a growing medium. .... just a though.

Thanks guys. I think I’ll haul some soil down there today and move the plants an inch or so away from the grass.

I would haul the grass off completely

I did hill mine with soil then some straw then soil

The old people used to use ell grass and straw but I wonder how much they lost due to mold

But the looks of the pic, mold is your enemy .

Too warm, keeping the roots too damp thus mold

It’s funny we don’t use grass clipping out here cause it would be to decomposing, and warm. I don’t put potato’s in the ground until Dec. So interersting to see different places do thing at different times. When do you guys put in your onions.
