My husband, who is a Lumberjock, forwarded me the link to this story written by a fellow Lumberjock. It truly touched my heart and found myself a little teary at the end of the story. I think this story is very fitting here at Gardentenders. So, with Trifern’s permission …

I read it…........just goes to show that beauty is skin deep and the very soul of a living “thing” can be turned into a priceless piece of craftsmenship.

43 years ago on my fifth birthday my father and I planted two sweet cherry trees. Little pretzel thick sticks.

Over the next 15 years those trees grew and myself and my 5 other brothers and two sisters had a ball of fun with those trees. Both climbing it and eating and selling the cherries. Poor trees took a lot of abuse and all of us have many cherry tree memories.

About 5 years ago my folks sold their home, guessing that was tough to do for my mother as the house was just jam packed with memories…...................but my father had those two trees cut down and sent to a saw mill. he then shipped the lumber to me and said…......”Do you you want with it” It was the TOUGHEST cherry I have ever machined.

I made every one of my siblings a small piece of furniture. from lap desks to shaker clocks. Now my eldest brother is a tough old soul, I have never seen him shed a tear and on Christmas morning he opened his gift, read my inscription on the back of the door of his shaker clock…...........and he cried.

I saved the best part of that cherry lumber for my mother and father. Making a hanging shadow box…..........after reading the inscription…............... he cried too as did every one of my siblings.

the greatest achievement a craftsman could have, is seing tears of joy come from men and women, when they see what gifted hands can do.

after that its all about the paycheque…..........(insert evil grin here)

gt,
that is one beautiful story! Again, a craftsman is only as good as his heart ( once he has the knowledge of how to). You have to love what you do to be able to infuse it with “life”!

Thank you for sharing your story!

We had a BEAUTIFUL, and VERY OLD, Black Walnut tree in the front yard of the home we lived in for over 30 years. She became “my friend” as I felt she protected our home from the elements, and announced the beginning of summer with her wonderful aroma. And I always thought she giggled at me, when she dropped her leaves all within 2 days each fall … leaving us knee deep in leaves. Oh how I wish we had cut a branch off before we moved so that I would have had a piece of her to take with me. So I totally relate to this and Greenthumbs stories.
