Many old-time farmers in Newfoundland still spread capelin on their grounds to add fertilizer to the soil. Every year when the capelin roll ashore they beach themselves and many die in the process. This is a great time to collect some free fertilizer or compost amendments…Capelin and Kelp.

It was a beautiful day yesterday on Middle Cove beach, about 15 minutes from where I live…I decided to take some photographs to share:

Great pics X.They brought back memories of younger days when we would all go smelt fishing in Lake Ontario. It used to be so much fun. Then big money came along and decided we needed Salmon in the great lakes and now there are no more smelt . :-(

Gorgeous photos. But is it weird that I was really envying your ability to get free Capelin and Kelp? :-)

it sure would be hard to get any work done. I’d want to spend all of my time watching the water!

I have often heard dead fish is great for the garden. Fisherman in the old days used them I know Best fertilizer around

Fish emulsion (sp) I buy it when ever I can. But hard to get.

Terrific fertilizer

I used to gather seaweed off the beach but now not allowed

I too remember the smelt.
When I left Ontario the Lamprey eel had just made it’s mark on the great lakes.
I understand that they now have Zebra snails brought over from Europe and that the pollution around the great lakes is only better than it was but not the way it was.

So how fairs the Capelin compared to the older times?

I have a friend in St Johns. He is coming in 2 weeks

he just called and loves to joke and and carry on

I love the sense of humor

He thought he was going to pull something one me, lol,lol

He said, the Capelin is rolling and then a pause. Oh I said the fish, old farmers let them rot and used them for fertilizer

he starts to laff and says how did you know that?

I reply I know lots of things from “over the pond”

I just read your post 2 day ago so I remembered the Capelin, lol

thanks, we both laffed so he thinks I am smart now about NFLD. lol,lol I didn’t tell him about your post

You saved me there but I will tell him tho.

I didn’t know about these fish although I do know people from NFLD

I live about 10 min from the ocean so I will give him the tour
