anything that is “work” is shunned by most. The first world nations are “fat”..............even “obese”. I wonder how the levels of obescity might drop if everyone had to toil in the garden for their food?

I find that most people “claim” to love gardening when in fact they love “looking” at a nice garden. Gardens are endless work which I personally find thearaputic. Since my other half decided that she would do the garden this year, inbetween playing ball hockey, hockey, baseball, coaching various sports teams, and then ferrying her kids around on their whim…................the veggie garden is a bed of weeds.

My FIL in all his infinite farming experience used the tractor while I was away and somehow managed to throw a piston rod through the engine block….........the ol girl is indeed done, finished, toasted, baked but the parts might make for nice sculpture?

On the way to work this morning I heard a local gardening outfit mention that many kids don’t know where potatoes come from and can’t recognize same when pulled from the ground.
Apparently, many thought they came as “chips”.

In their “garden education plots” many parents were unable to recognize peas in the pod.

So to come back to your statement about working a garden you are quite right.
The process will be agonizing somewhat similar to paying $5.00 for head of lettuce.
I will bet our New Canadians will have no problem adapting to a little urban horticulture.
p.s. I have a rule that he who uses my tools gets to repair them .
Looks like FIL will have a couple of decisions to make. <g>

Thanks for sharing the article. Definitely, I’ve been getting more & more requests to work edibles into my clients’ gardens. And, yes, many of them are looking at it as babysteps to learn about gardening. Others are looking at ways to become more self-sufficient in light of rising costs.

And, on the potato front, that’s one of the easiest crops to teach families about. Kids love learning where their food comes from!

I used to have Newfie neighbors next door and they never had a garden before

he planted 100 tomatoes plants thinking one tom came off each plant

he also planted 100 lbs of potaotes thinking the same

Their son lived at home he did not know carrots grew in the ground. He told me himself and that is something for a 34yr old who claimed to be so smart

They, none of them in this family knew veggies grew in the ground

I asked where did they think they came from. They said off trees in Florida somewhere

I was totally stunned with their thinking

I knew a young girl once (about 15) who refused to eat fresh produce of any kind, although she would cheerfully eat canned stuff. When I finally asked her why, she said it was because she wouldn’t eat anything that grew in the dirt. So I asked where she thought the canned stuff came from. She said “factories.”

WOW, some of these stories are just blowing me away … I fortunately have not run into anyone or know anyone like this. Our schools here (at least in our area) are still doing the elementary school level experiments where the kids grow veggies in a milk carton … and high school science has greenhouses.

I didn’t buy a turnip or potatoes all winter that year and I had enough toms and salads veggies to eat all summer . me and everyone else they knew

She took boxes of veggies to her doctors clinic every week so she supplids the doctors too who could afford to buy the stuff
I told her to give some to me to put in the food bank box at our church

But no, she was the type who was out to impress people

Their garden was wonderful but so many who needed food could have used it

That was the last garden they had. Too much work they said. yep had to agree planting tom and potatoes like that not that I didn’t tell them before planting but”” He”” had a big ego and so I knew nothing

No nice to gossip but that was the way it was with them

During the veggie garden season, not a soul shows up and leaves empty handed and at the end of the year I FILL the back of my truck and make rounds through the city giving bags of food away to young struggling families…...................I hate to see it go to waste
