I am so excited! I counted 9 buds on our 16 rosebushes this am.

I also (with a lot of help from hubby) got 3 out of 4 beds planted! Once I get batteries for the camera, I will have my son help me post some pics for y’all.

You know, Gran, except for the 2 Green Ice Minis, I don’t remember which roses are which color (blush).

The front bed got petunias and salvia, the little bed beside the deck got impatiens, and the bed under the 4 trees got hostas, ferns, and hen-n-chicks, plus I shifted the astilbe and the huechera closer to the front of that one, so they don’t disappear among the hostas.

I also noticed, this afternoon, my azalea is leafing out. I thought for sure it was dead after grandson#1 dropped a brick on it this spring.

Well your beds sure sound lovely Dini … full of color and texture. Under your trees really sounds pretty. I love Astibles; grew them at the other house where I had lots of shade. What type of Ferns ya got? There are so many varieties out now; from when I first began “shade gardening”. Your yard sounds really awesome, I cannot wait to see your photos!!! :-)

Giggled at the “attack of the grandson” ... I have similar stories; but ya just got to love those grandbabies!!!! Precious they are …

GranT, the ferns are the best of all possible varieties (especially on my budget) FREE. I rescued them, with permission, from an empty lot here in the park, before the maintenance guy could mow ‘em down, and I have no clue what variety they actually are, but I was not going to refuse as many large, well-established plants as I was willing to dig up!
This is only our 2nd summer here, and I was working 40-plus hours last year, so I’m just starting to get the beds situated the way I want them. We moved in to what was basically a blank slate, since the only thing the previous owner had planted was a handful each of irises, stellas and daffodils!
We did hubby’s 10×20 rose garden last year, and put in a bleeding heart, huechera and astilbe under the trees, and the azalea in it’s own little spotlight bed, surrounded by plantain, and a little balloon flower along the side fence, and 3 hollyhocks in the front bed, and filled everything in with annuals, and that was as far as we got last spring.
Then last fall we put in tulips, crocuses and anemones in the front bed.
This spring, the hostas and hen-n-chicks wiped out the perennial budget, so I’m still filling in with annuals!

Man Dini, sounds like you got a lot accomplished last year!!! That rose garden sounds just gorgeous!!!! And how lucky were you with those Ferns, I would have been digging too!!!! LOL! I am a bit envious of all your beautiful Ferns, cuz I cannot grow them here. Your beds sound lovely, and I cannot wait to see them. Little bit each year, and before you know it, you will have to be dividing plants and creating new gardens for those plants.

This is our second summer at our new home as well. Looks like we got a bit in common … we too had a pretty blank slate, except here the previous owners hated outside work. So we moved into a yard full of oddly placed big bushes and lots of little rocks everywhere. I mean, they paid a “pretty penny” for all these stones, but they are not what I want at all. So digging them out, has been a real chore. I ended up dividing a lot of my plants at our old home before we moved, so luckly I was able to bring them with me for our new front bed. Didn’t fill it up by any stretch, but gave me a good foundation to build on.

Well have fun planting this weekend … supposed to be gorgeous. Today sure was. I spent the day outside, putzing around in the yard. A few of my sale catalog order flowers arrived, so I planted them in the front bed. Anxious to see how they do.

What annuals are you going with? There are so many to choose from … I planted some Gazania’s this year. First year for trying them. They sure are purdy.

I love Gazanias, they are so cheery.

The only things I still have to get in are the cosmos and snapdragons for along the side fence. I clumped up the old irises at the back of that fence line, left an empty spot ( which I filled in with oriental lillies rescued from another empty lot), then clumped the daffs, another blank space and then the old stellas. So I’m just filling in the 2 blanks and the rapidly fading daffs with cosmos, putting snapdragons in front of them. That will do it for this year, and we’ll add more perennials next year. This year’s budget is done..lol.

Yah, I am pretty much done planting for this year too. Won’t it be fun watching it all fill and grow throughout the summer. :-)

Tuesday, I’ll be picking up batteries for the camera.
How long it’ll take after that, to get the kid down here to help me post ‘em, well, that’s a whole ‘nother question, ha, ha.

Hear ya about “technology” ... hahahaha!!! About the time I get it figured out, something changes. Good thing hubby “does it for a living”.

Can’t wait to see your roses Dini … :-)
