Topic tags/keywords: wild flowers wild plants trilliums trout lily

As most of you already know, we live on a wild wooded lot.
As soon as the weather warms up, we are blessed with a variety of plants, flowers, grasses.
I was thinking that it might be interesting to show you all what we have here as they pop up and maybe some of you can do the same thing from where ever you are!

This is the Red Trillium, which this year, is growing all over the place. 3 years ago, there was hardly any!

!

and this year we find that they are growing in 2 different shades.

But, we haven’t seen any Snow Trillium yet!

And this one, 4 years ago, I could find only 2 places on the whole property where they grew and this year, they are, like the Red Trillium, all over the place.

I do believe this is the “Trout Lily”

This one is of the family of the Wild Violet

And then this one, I really do not know: it looks a bit like a dandelion, but…???

Hi Your yellow one is Colt’s foot. It is the French sign for a drug store because centuries ago it was used as the bases for a lot of the herbal remedies. After the flowers it will get the leaves.
What is a Snow Trillium? I am impressed with how many different plants you have in bloom already. I had snow on Monday!! Thanks for the walk.

Loved the walk in the woods “E”. I never realized there was a red trillium. The white trillium is ‘Ontario’s flower’ (some might not be aware) and its illegal to pick. Once picked I have always understood it will never flower again. I could be corrected on this one.

it supposedly takes 7 years for the flower to re-emerge.
There are the whites, the reds and the pinkish ones and I understand that there is a green one as well but I’ve never seen them.

When we first got here, we had quite a few of the white ones and hardly any red! And this year, lots of the reds, both the very dark and the regular one. Haven’t seen any white yet, but I think I saw the buds for the white ones. To be followed!
MsD. I will keep an eye out for the Green one: that should be really neat!

eklectic your little flower is spring beauty. It once was used as a potato substitute by settlers. It is an ephemeral (if emeril). That means like most early bloomers it will die completely to the ground come summer. Then next year do it all over again. Notice the candy stripes on this flower. They are really pink when the plant 1st starts blooming and get lighter with age.

The Mayflower is NOva Scotia’s provincial flower

it is a flower I have not seen in years

The fragrance is to die for

There has been so much clear cutting the last few years they say there are hardly any of them left now

They bloom only in May

Last year I went looking for them as I knew where to look at a teen ager

I couldn’t even get into the area now it is so over grown

I wonder if they grow in other provinces

Have any of you seen them in your area??

Never heard of “wild” Mallows. Beautiful, beautiful plants.

I grow “Zebrina” Mallows … they also reseed themselves every year and tend to come up everywhere. But I let them get “big enough” and then just transplant them to where I want. They get nice and tall. Strong stalk, so no staking is necessary. Like you Bunting, one of my favorites!

I have them coming up all over now … what tickles me is it is never quite in the same spot where the original grows. I like to see where they sprout each spring.

I have never had any trouble with mine reseeding … I don’t cut them down until after our first hard frost and I leave the plant/roots alone till spring. Sometimes I will get growth back on the original stalk, sometimes not. They bloom right up to that first hard frost. However, I do cut them back quite a bit mid-summer; makes the stalks good and strong and the leaves huge.

I just sewed a whole Pkg of Zebrinas about 5 min ago

I normally buy one plant hoping for seeds. But no luck

One plant here is $4.99 so thought I would try starting them inside along with the rest of my plants

$2.99 for a whole pkg is a lot better on my budget. I really love the Zebrina

I am going to plant them in a different spot . Better soil and full sun

I love your pic

Fiddle head season is over now since a week or 2

They need to be picked just as they come through the soil with the foiled heads

Any later than that they are bitter and tough

But then a much as I love greens , Fiddleheads is one I don’t like

They are thick growing along the river and brook here

I think they look nicer as ferns than in my tummy, lol,lol

Democles, Bunting answer the guestion re. fiddleheads. Early spring just as the fern is poking its head through the ground. Do a search as all ferns are not edible. I tried them once and was not taken. They are sold in some of our stores but its a rare find.

‘E’ .... many ferns you have ….. lovely indeed. Likely a few “fiddles” there …. lol.

I wonder if the area I had the Zebrenias is just too damp and that is why I loose them

can they handle any dampness at all?? That whole area, the soil is a bit damp almost all the time

I keep putting sand and peat in there but it doesn’t help

Any suggestions how I can improve the soil so it won’t be so damp

The bed is in full sun all day so I would think it would dry out but it doesn’t completly

Well they can handle a certain amount of moistness, just not a constant “wet” if that makes sense. They seem to prefer it dryer.

Now I do water early mornings (soaker hose system) when the heat really hits here mid-summer … but my soil is a bit rocky and sandy so I have good drainage; they are not contantly sitting in “wet”.

Now at our old home my Zebrina’s were in a corner where they got full sun and very little water. They were mixed in with my daylilies (that do not need a lot of water either). And they did wonderful there.

I might move them to a dryer spot and see how they do this season. The wetness might be your issue. I also prune them in June, cut them back quite a bit. From that point on the stalks gets nice and thick, leaves get big and flower like crazy.

Hope this helps.

Bunting, you certainly do not want to prune them now as they are just coming up (here too). I mentioned above that I prune them in June. I normally have substantial growth by then. Sorry if there was confusion with that.

fiddlehead question…..........they are ferns ?.........being that there are many fern specie here, is there a particular specie that are the fiddleheads you eat?...........if so, how can you tell which ones they are?

I have tried fiddle heads and although 99% of the food I make is yummy, fiddleheads were simply not palatable

How do you cook them

Greenthumb… My family have been gathering fiddleheads for many years in this area.I’m sorry I can’t tell you what the name of the fern is but it’s the only one I ever see around here.We put them in a bucket of water to get rid of the chafing. It usually floats to the top.Boil them for about 20 minutes. When you go to eat them add a splash of vinegar or lemon juice and lots of butter. They really are tasty. But remember to pick only the new heads. The bigger they get the more bitter they get.
