I saw someone had mentioned Parsnips in another thread. This got me thinking.I always hated them as a kid,but then again hated alot of other foods too back then.I have never cooked them in my life, and now I am wondering if I should try some.My Mother always boiled them,so thats the only way I know them.
How do you cook yours? Maybe it was the boiling that I didn’t like?

CG …. lol …. my neighbour years ago said they tasted like detergent so that was a turn off. His wife loved them so they always had parsnips growing. ;-)

Parsnips are tender and sweet. Not to sweet.

I love them but they are cheap to buy

Plus you need to leave them in the ground all winter to be any good

So I buy them Yummy

Slice them into quarter length wise.
Butter them on all sides.
Dip them in brown sugar.
Fry until tender.

Shamelfully good.

Parsnips are popular here, especially in soup. As bunting said you do need to let them have a frost period so they are harvested quite late in order for them to have sweetness.

I can’t say I like them much and I am a veggie nut :)

I love them.
you can also cook them with potatoes and mash them together, with butter, and milk and for those of you who like freely grinded pepper, it is fantastic.
Also, in a good home made stew in the middle of winter!!!

Gals and Guys, you don’t have to smother them in sugar but you need enough on them to carmelise.

This terribly good with a thick cut barebequed pork chop.

ohhhh! my knees are getting weak, I have to lie down now.

B. sprouts apparently are extremely healthy ….. and if planted, should be harvested after the frost CG. I might give parsnips a try as well CG.

Yes they can get bitter and I find if they get too big I don’t like them.I let mine get hit with frost and just pick the smaller ones, they are really good.
Now cabbage I only eat 2 ways, cole slaw and cabbage rolls, thats it.
I will grow some Parsnips this year and if I don’t like them I can always give them away.

We put parsnips in our stew. I used to hate them when I was a kid, because my mother used to boil them. They were horrid. They can be roasted though, or sauteed and they are quite nice.

By the way, countrygal, that is a nice avator. Do you grow brugmansia? If so, is that one of yours, perchance a Charles Grimaldi?
