Topic tags/keywords: feeders bird bath story environment

One beautiful hot morning, while resting on a boulder in our little corner of woodland, I noticed that my dogs, Charlie and Bear, were cocking their heads as though they had heard something. They were staring towards the bottom of a small grouping of saplings. Being hearing impaired, I was not surprised at not hearing anything but decided to investigate. You can imagine my surprise when my eyes stumbled on what appeared to be a giant butterfly who was sitting on a shady rock, seeming very distraught. Crouched there, staring in amazement, I had the eerie feeling of hearing a voice saying that it was very thirsty. Using an oak leaf lying on the ground, I poured a little bit of water from my bottle and offered it to the being that very delicately started to drink.

After a few minutes, the voice started explaining that consequently of the mess that we humans are making of this world with the resulting climate change, many beings, small and big, furry or feathered, are suffering as their habitats are dying: their homes, the streams that they used for centuries, their food, are disappearing and so are they.

As we were sitting there, more and more beings came out, some drinking from the leaf where I kept pouring water, while others were just staring back at me and I felt a powerful urge to go back to my work area and try to build something that would help these creatures.

First, I developed a concrete toadstool that I hid throughout my flowerbeds to serve as homes. Then the carved leaves for drinking and bathing in addition to the concrete stumps to be use as habitats for different friends as well as feeding/drinking stations for legion of different little beings.

Everything had to be unique, as similar to Mother Nature’s creations, as possible. However, I needed to make them a lot stronger to make sure that it would withstand climate changes. Therefore, I mixed my concrete by hand, one piece at a time, making molds out of sand and different material and solidifying them by using wire mesh and metal bars where needed.

Now that my friends are happier, they make me feel their concern in connection with their friends and families who have need for the assistance of human to survive.

So here I am, giving you the opportunity to help all of our furry and feathered friends, those we can see and those that visit us in our dreams to carve them a welcoming place on this new earth.

Concrete bird bath: but as you can see, all of our friends come and visit!

We sure have some interesting conversations at this feeder!!

EK, you are doing exactly what I feel is my responsibility to the planet.
Someone must speak for the animals.
They have vital roll in our existence here and they are currently being regarded as “surplus”.

Bravo to you!

thanks guys!
If we all got together, each one of the tenders, and did one special thing in our gardens, wouldn’t this be something!!
I am sure that a lot of us already do, so it might be interesting to share “How we do it”!

Too bad we do not have a site for “environment” hey MsD? :-)

Bob,
Thanks!
I have mine outside all year round. I make sure they always have water to drink even in the winter by having the baths under the outdoor air vents!!

Drives the cats crazy!!!

I picked a lovely bird bath last weekend at lowes, loved the design of the bowl with all the detail on the side, and the stand also. It was the last one there of that kind

Hey Bunting,
Just get yourself some Portland, sand, hardware cloth, chicken wire and there you go.
Also, depending which style you go for, r-bars!

Have fun!

And GranT: thanks!

Well Horsetail I am happy to tell you that it was a birthday present from hubby last year, he shopped around quite a bit to get me something I could have a lot of fun with and would be very easy to handle!
My 9 year old niece had a ball with it last summer!! That easy!

It is a Panasonic, model DMC-TZ1!

I wish I could do something like that! Is it hard?
I noticed that you say you are in south east Ontario. Are you far from Messina? If not, maybe you could show me how to when I have time later on?
