Topic tags/keywords: ground cherries question

Ok with the economy and my house being close to done I’m thinking a small garden. Somewhat under an acre. So I get into the heritage seed thing and they have something called Ground Cherries. Well that got my interest. I love cherries. Anyone grow them? My dad, the master gardener, says we’ve got them all over the farm…called em weeds! Love to hear your experiences. I hope they like sawdust!

I’ve never heard of ground cherries, but I’ve heard of road apples…er, you don’t want those.

I never planted them, but got tons of them in Montreal and they started here last year???

It is an interesting plant! But I definitely do not enjoy the taste!

never heard of ground cherries.

try it once and if you don’t like it.. remove it (unless it is one of those invasive plants that you can’t get rid of after you plant it)

Very invasive! And they do not always wait for you to plant them. They “find” you!!

I know of some people who love them, actually go and pick the ones in the wild!!!

Is this what you’re talking about?

Physalis pruinosa: http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/ground_cherry.htm & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physalis

They look a lot like a tomatillo to me, and they’re in the nightshade family, which may be why they’re so invasive as Eklectic mentions. But, all the descriptions indicate they taste more sweet-fruity than a tomatillo does.

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing this one!

That is exactly how it looks!
And it must be an acquired taste!!
