Hi Tenders – I’ve wandered over from the Lumberjocks area!

I have a cement patio and am interested in some privacy in NYC (Zone 7?). I’m concentrating on two areas:

1) I’m looking for some evergreens that are about 4’ tall that can live in a pot. I think about 2’ wide. I want to line a bunch of these potted trees up to cover about 10’ of space.

2) I need another taller, wider solution for privacy. Maybe installing some lattice with beds of vines at the bottom? A evergreen vine would be awesome but not a necessity.

thanks!

I haven’t had much experience growing large evergreens in containers; however, I have grown small seedlings (hemlock, red cedar, blue spruce, Norway spruce) in pots until they were big enough to plant in the yard. They seem very easy to grow in pots, but I have never let them grow more than a two feet tall before I put them into the ground. This HGTV internet site about growing evergreens in containers looks interesting. In particular, two kinds looked potentially appropriate for your patio: the skypencil and the skyrocket. I don’t have any ideas about an evergreen vine, but another GT probably will.

evergreen vines: here’s a site that might help

re: trees in a pot – I’ve never done it but would be afraid of the trees /roots getting too big for the pot.

I think the vines on trellis would work. You could probably build you own and post them here and on Lumberjocks.

BTW, I’m in Zone 7 in Ga. New York must be in 6 or 5.

I’ve been looking at some beautiful flowering vines but do they attract a lot of bees? My girlfriend is allergic to bees so I wouldn’t want to put up a big wall of bee magnets.

if you have a big enough container then youcan certainly plant evergreens in it successfully. You will have to add fertilizer but thats of little consequence.
