Would gardeners like my Kerry-All Pouch for potting soil?

Topic tags/keywords: soil pouch garden storage

I usually have a bag or two of potting soil to pot plants (of course), mix into flower beds, etc. and the relatively thin plastic is always ripping in the wrong place.
I was thinking of making a soil pouch from the same heavy duty woven poly that my plywood and trim pouches are made from. It would have a capacity of about the same as a 4 or 5 gallon garbage can. So, now you’re thinking…”I’ll just use a 5 gallon garbage can”... which will work in most cases. I’m thinking the pouch would be more stable in a wheelbarrow and therefore more easily moved around the yard.

Would this product sell? Or should I just clean out my garbage can? ;-)

You can see the plywood pouches on my website http://www.kerrywoodworking.com

Your opinions, as always, most welcome…

I’m probably an exception to the rule, but I don’t buy soil. I just sift my compost into my wheelbarrow and we then mix our own potting mixes using river sand and collected peat moss. It never comes from a bag and never goes into a bag.

I can see the use of your plywood pouch but I just can’t see buying a bag so I could unbag my bagged earth into another bag, if you know what I mean :)

If I use a plastic bag of dirt I just put that into the wheel barrow and slice it down the middle if I know I am going to use it all or just pour some into my barrow for what I need. Can’t really see myself pouring dirt from one bag to another.Just MHO.

I don’t buy bagged soil, so I am not your target market. Good luck if you do decide to design and market it.

Now I see them.

How many bodies will it hold?................kidding.

Without having tried it, I can only see difficulty in using it. I’m trying to imagine my girlfriend holding the bag open while I shovel dirt into it. We have difficulties even folding sheets together. Having personally loaded and unloaded hundreds of tractor trailer loads of sheet goods, plywood, veneers with and without help I cant imagine filling it with plywood either unless of course its an emergency but I try and avoid those.

As for hauling soil around, I just dont get it. I will stick with a wheelbarrow and shovel or the trailer and tractor.

perhaps if you had a way of making the package ridgid, so that it can “pop”open ?......then it might work for me.

Good Luck

Thanks for the viewpoint. The “hold-open” feature was one I was thinking of, but this garden pouch thing was just an idea that popped into my head. This is how great things like Chia Pets were born, lol.

The plywood pouch is intended mainly for a few sheets, be it delivery by a building supply flatbed, or a pickup truck owned by a woodworker or contractor. Full lifts of plywood and other building materials are usually pre-wrapped from the manufacturer. I see you’re in “northish” Ontario, so I’m sure there are many days people would like to have something to put that $60 sheet of plywood in before heading home.

The ideas for the drywall covers and trim pouches came from the guys that load the trucks at a couple of local building supply stores. They complained there was nothing that really worked for covering a lift of drywall, and using roll after roll of single-use plastic for long pieces of trim was time consuming and a waste of money.

So, I guess it’s safe to assume your truck box (and cap) is 8’ long.. but what if you need to haul 12’ or longer trim on a regular basis?

Kerry, an innovative product, but I notice in most of the pictures on your web site, the materials being hauled are still partially exposed to the elements?

Sorry, I thought it was obvious that I’ve showed a couple of pictures of the materials sticking out, then a closed pouch where they’re pushed all the way in, but since several people have pointed out this concern, I must address it.
I want better resolution pics and am going to get some where it is also clear that they shove all the way in. In fact, I will soon have a video showing the pouches being loaded, so this should clarify things.

I appreciate all the suggestions (and so far, constructive criticism) I’ve received from people on here (GardenTenders and LumberJocks). Keep ‘em coming!
