I know there are some “fans” of dahlias out there sooooo. I bought two bags (10 dahlias in each) and was given another. Quite a few garden folks at the nursery said they start theirs indoors so my question is

Do you start your dahlias indoors and i so when?

How big are your containers/pots?

I planted 1 1/2 bags a week ago and the “greens” are popping out already.

Yes they can be started now.I use 6in pots but, whatever the tuber can fit in so there is a few inches of soil around.I try to use a deeper pot as it makes transplanting easier.Just make sure they are not kept too warm or wet.

Greenthumb, I have grown dahlias in the past and my dad had beautiful ones. But I haven’t did them for years. I remeber that you have to start dahlias inside bc they require a much longer growing season than we have here. I would start ‘roots’ in a pot just big enough to accomodate it. Don’t plant outside until all danger of frost is passed.
Jroot, grows beautiful dahlias. He can probably give you more detailed instrutions and tips on how to mazimise your blooms.

I usually start mine at the middle / end of March.

Here is a link of an earlier posting which might be of some assistance. There even is a link within this link to a more detailed posting of what I do.

If you wish more info, you need only ask. Don’t get tempted to start too soon though. You don’t want leggy dahlia stems.
