Finally got the fireplace to the point to where we could have a fire in it.. :)

After 1.5 MONTHS waiting for the people to ship out the fireplace damper, we finally got it in a few days ago… Heavy freakin 90lb box.. It was re-boxed into some other light weight box.. I thought for sure the cast iron would be shattered when I opened it up..

Luckily it was in one piece…

Even more luckily, it actually FIT when I put it in.

Here’s the inaugural fire.

Shot of the new damper in place.. It’s lower than it should be, but it drafts just fine where it is. Only other way to have it put in higher would have been to have a mason come in, bust out the back of the chimney and to redo the whole bloody thing.

But, it works just fine as I did it.. Used firebox mortar in a tube to affix it in place.. Stands up to 2k F.

We’d also been painting… Dining room is green now, and the living room is this brown.. Picture does NOT do the fireplace mantel justice.. Paint is a semi gloss on the wall and gloss on the trim to stay historically accurate.

Here’s a shot of the mantel before painting… I built it out of 3/4” MDF and Poplar.

Oh yeah.. And THIS is what it looked like when we moved in.. The mantel was HUGE… Way too large for the room.. And it was made out of plywood, 2×4’s and Styrofoam.

your re-do is sooo much nicer looking! I agree, the original was literally swallowing the room! My bosse’s husband is an artist/designer/sculptor. I’m sure if he saw the new compared to old he’d agree. Very nice job, IMHO :)

Your version is much more tasteful. You have an excellent opportunity to put a lovely plant stand on either side in front of the two windows. I like the use of marble as it gives the room a “classy” look.

You did a fantastic job on the fireplace mantel Scott!!!! Nice design indeed. I am in agreement as far as it being much more historically accurate for your home. Love the brown walls too, makes the fireplace really pop.

I must admit I miss our fireplace at the old house … that “puppy” could throw out the heat and Apple Wood smells wonderful. It was so nice to watch the wood burn. We had many winter “camp-out nights” in the living room when the kids were small with sleeping bags and roasting hot dogs and marshmallows. Lots of fond memories surrounding fireplaces … :-)

Beautiful fireplace, Scott. What is the age of your home?

Good job, Scott. I agree, your version does compliment the size and style of your fireplace.

Radicalfarmergal, home’s not too too old.. Just a little farm house.. Walls are plaster, but it was done over a drywall skin.. THICK walls, but stable. Framing is all rough sawn oak at 2×4, 2×6, etc true dimensional. One of these days I’ll pull the data from the courthouse on this home.

Once we get everything cleaned up and finish painting I’ll put another pic up. :)

Been enjoying it every night, for sure.
