Finally got the fireplace to the point to where we could have a fire in it.. :) After 1.5 MONTHS waiting for the people to ship out the fireplace damper, we finally got it in a few days ago… Heavy freakin 90lb box.. It was re-boxed into some other light weight box.. I thought for sure the cast iron would be shattered when I opened it up.. Luckily it was in one piece… Even more luckily, it actually FIT when I put it in. Here’s the inaugural fire.
Shot of the new damper in place.. It’s lower than it should be, but it drafts just fine where it is. Only other way to have it put in higher would have been to have a mason come in, bust out the back of the chimney and to redo the whole bloody thing.
But, it works just fine as I did it.. Used firebox mortar in a tube to affix it in place.. Stands up to 2k F. We’d also been painting… Dining room is green now, and the living room is this brown.. Picture does NOT do the fireplace mantel justice.. Paint is a semi gloss on the wall and gloss on the trim to stay historically accurate.
Here’s a shot of the mantel before painting… I built it out of 3/4” MDF and Poplar.
