Hi all GT people. I have gotten a bunch of old windows from an auction. I wonder if you awesome gardeners could help me recycle them into garden art or garden projects. Any ideas?

thank you

I have a bunch myself, was planning on making cold frames (or using them inside as “real” frames)

Hi, Lucky you!!

They are not that easy to come by. I have a few and so far I have painted one, both sides:

hung 4 in my pergola (people on treasure hunts use this place by calling it “The windows without walls”)

Will be hanging some in the woods in interesting spot to form :”A Window on Nature”.
I also have doors that will be used as “Portal to another world” in the forest and the entrance of the garden.

What an awesome structure. I wish I were able to do this; muscle wise and know how. What a wonderful place to sit and ponder nature. I love the use of windows.

I also love your mushroom painting. Did you design it yourself? I was thinking about the “Window on Nature” too. I have tons of places to put them in the woods.

thank you

Thanks! My significant other made it and at that time he did not know much about building, but he tried and I am quite proud of it.
And yes I design what I paint. Here is my latest:

not windows but recycled tiles.

And Scott, I was also planning to make cold frame.

Eclectic….....first picture, furthest mushroom to the right, ...uuuummmm ?

I like what Eclectic did with hers, nice when then just hang under the pergola and BTW…...nice graden spot Eclectic.

I used a few in the youngest boys clubhouse. A multi leveled dwelling tucked in the trees just off set from the pond. He loves it.

In the past, instead of clearing trees (should you have too many) I have left the trunks about three feet high) and built a frame around several of the old window frames and then mounted that on top of the trunks and tucked into the forest edge. Sorry no pics.

Have a stiff drink and look about your yard, you never know what a slight state of inebreation can do for a garden?

my gazebo is wall to wall reclaimed windows.

If I ever get extras I am going to hang them in the gardens such as the nail-less picture above. (very cool)

Hmmmmm, I just thought of something … what if you had an expanse of solid, empty “wall” ... could you hang the window on that wall and then mount a flower box on that window that is then filled with wonderful flowers. Almost like wall art or a outside picture. Could even paint the window and box some contrasting colors.

I purchased some windows at an action. I did build a cold frame with one frame, I have 23 30 inch by 30 inch windows left. I am going to build a greenhouse with the remainder, I also got some skylights at the same action fore the roof area. You could build a wind screen in the garden if needed or use them as dividers between different sections of the garden.

I refinished one old window, put a mirror in it, additional wood around it and a shelf attached to the bottom. It is hung above the sink in one of the bathrooms

at an antique store last week we saw an old window with a small quilt displayed behind the glass. .. it won’t work for outside of course.

I wonder if you could make a little table out of an old window. Not sure how that would be done or work as a table.. but it’s an idea… horizontal instead of vertical

MsD :You can used it as a “table shadow box”! Depending on the size naturally. or just a plain shadow box on the wall!!

Countrygall: Thanks you. And I have the same problem for the house window: thank god my hubby is a real pro at it!LOL
