I have lots of cheerful yellow mums still blooming by the door but they are starting to look pretty scraggly after some heavy rainstorms. I also have two small bushes producing beautiful little pink roses so I still have a little color left. -- Robin, Massachusetts - "Live simply so others can simply live." M. Gandhi |

My 8 ft. peach Brugmansia is still in bloom and since I covered it with Remay, it didn’t freeze last week. I also have several roses (white/blush pink, pink & orange), a purple iris (must be a rebloomer), azalea (rebloomer), rhododendrum (confused or rebloomer?), orange cosmos, zebra hollyhock – Malva sylvestris. -- A weed is a plant that is growing where it was not purposefully placed by human hands. |

Although I had to clear ice off the birdbath this am, I still have geraniums, spider plants, begonia and fushia blooming in flower pots that are too big for me to bring in. I have taken cuttings from the plants and just leave them to bloom until the frost gets them. I hate to pull the begonia until the frost does get the foliage on it. I have so many other things still blooming, little plants that apparently are protected by the fallen leaves. I have made a slideshow to show on a blog. If you have time, take a look. I think there are about 25 pics, taken this morning. -- 'To plant a Garden is to believe in Tomorrow' |

No flowers left in the garden that I can see. We’ve had a lot of HEAVY frost, so they are done. I did bring my brugs in and have some indoor flowers. They keep my wife company in her studio. LOL

The brug is beautiful, jroot. Your flowers must be inspiration for your DW’s painting. The glimpse of those in the background are marvelous! -- 'To plant a Garden is to believe in Tomorrow' |

I thought that all was dead in the garden, but yesterday when I went to finish cutting it back, I found these surprises.
I guess there was still some life in the garden after all the frost we experienced. -- jroot |

Understanding that I am subtropical, my four o’clock just started blooming, the one that I ripped out of a shrub a month ago, then felt bad for the little black root? A bromeliad, Billbergia pyramidalis, is blooming, but it’s the last of them for the year I think. And I think some Vriseas are finishing up. Geraniums are still going, and I’ve had early random blossoms on my azaleas this week. I treat lots of annuals as perennials. Those geraniums have been blooming for two years steady now save when I cut them back. Ruellia and Catharanthus continue to bloom. My hibiscus are happy that some few leaves in the tree canopy are falling. Now they are getting enough sun again to put on more than the one or two blossoms a day I had in August through October. All of my gingers and cannas have yellow leaves and no more blossoms, and my amaryllis and crinums have gone dormant for what will only be a few weeks really. |

Jroot, I especially like the photo you took of the feathery grasses in silhouette. Even though many of the flowers fade with the coming of fall in the temperate climates, there are still many non-flower colors, shapes and textures that catch one’s eye, especially now that they are not competing with many flowers. I am fond of my female Winterberry Holly bushes this time of year. The bright red berries really stand out now that most of the leaves are gone. Thanrose, I had to smile when I read your story about the four o’clock that you felt you just had to replant. It is paying you back now for your earlier kindness. -- Robin, Massachusetts - "Live simply so others can simply live." M. Gandhi |

She is a cross between Roth Kirch and Balao bred by Brug guru Monika in Germany. She certainly is a pretty one. I have been fleld testing her in Canada. -- jroot |
