May 11/12

This is my (non-)entry for the GT Challenge: All Boxed In.

My original plan fell apart when I couldn’t find the metal lunch box that was my hubbies. It would have been such a lovely planter – full of sentiment and scentiment :D

But, it wasn’t to be so I’ve been scratching my head for a couple of weeks or so trying to come up with a backup plan.
The other day while working in the shed my eyes spied “it” – an old mailbox that we were going to use for a birdhouse. (Well, “Rick” was going to use it as a birdhouse. Sorry Rick.)

The box is located by the Post Family – Com Post, Emily Post, and Canada Post (their names are on the mailbox.)

I had part of a bag of dirt hanging around as well – just some cheap stuff – and I put that in the mailbox. I added a newspaper. I ripped some holes in the plastic wrapper. This should let enough rain in to soak the newspaper and I put holes in the bottom of the plastic to let it drain out onto the soil. Both the back and front doors are open so that rain water can get in.

I’m not much for container gardening – I never remember to water them – so I’ve just stuck a few “hen & chicks” plants inside. They should do ok.

And that’s it. Nothing fancy. Nothing practical. But it adds to my little vignette by my Thinking Outside The Inside Of Your Window Box Challenge creation.

Cool. I hope they get enough sunlight for the Hens & Chicks. Neat idea!

I should have put the names on the other side of the mailbox—but that is easily done. Then I can turn it to face the south.

Your mailbox looks perfect.

The hen and chicks are a good choice as this site will probably suffer from being dry. There are some small sedums that might be considered as well.

I like the whimsy of your mail box for the post family. I think it would be so much fun to peer inside and see little hens and chicks peeking out. Very creative!

thanks Robin.
It’s a fun little area. I hope the hen & chicks will survive some neglect… I know I’ll forget to water them
