Originally posted at lumberjocks but thought some might like it here

This was inspired by a fellow Lumberjock. A local mexican resturant helped me gather the caps so my first house here is for them. My next one will be more assorted and rarer caps. I just need 200 more.

I had difficulty smashing the caps flat. Just whacking them caused them to mushroom.

I went to my sketchup program and downloaded anothers work of a bottle cap. With that detail I sectioned the cap and tried to determine the radius needed in a steel ball to start the sides to spread out enough to allow flatening on a flat surface. It appeared to be slightly bigger than 2”. I could not find any steel ball that diameter that wasn’t expensive and not mail order.

Then it hit me…a ball hitch is 2”. And it has a handy flat spot on top. This has worked most excellent. Now if I can just find an easy way to remove the seal from the back side.

I am intrigued. How do you get the bottle caps to stay where they are? How are they attached?

I attached them with 1/2” narrow crown staples. My first try was with 1/2” brads but my fingers are too big and I was getting impatient.

I will be finishing another for myself soon and will post that. It will have a few more cool caps and not all so commercial like this one.

Thank you for explaining, Jagwah, this looks like a fun kind of project.
