2 years in the making, from coppicing/drying the cherry branch which has become the handle and growing the sorghum last season, the parts were finally all available for putting a broom together. I didn’t have enough seed heads for a flat broom, so it is more of a Nimbus 2001 model.
I described more about how I made this in my blog . I am no expert on making brooms and most of my effort was simply experimenting.
Handle – drawknifed, coppiced cherry
Broom – sorghum bicolor
Binding – Yucca and NZ Flax

I enjoyed reading your adventure in growing and making this broom and I like the way it looks too. How far can you fly and how fast? : )

So, is this the Nimbus 3000 prototype? Very nice. Wish I could make more room for things like this, but with 2 young children I’m told I must leave the lawn in – can’t convert to garden until they leave the nest…

The broom has come out so well. I appreciate your patience during this adventure.

Yesterday I rode it all the way to Canada, so I think it is performing well.
Thanks for your comments.
I really did use it to sweep the kitchen and it works better than what I had before…

Excellent! I got an education from John Holzwart during our Permaculture class, he is a broom maker also. He wrote an article for Mother Earth News.

I assume we will see your articles there soon. :-)

I suppose I should have read that first, Vince! Thanks for the link.
Seems your friend has pretty much covered the topic. I’ll have to think of something new ( though I do think that there is nothing new really to invent, only to document the past)

Does this mean you are in Canada now for the summer? Any chance you will have time to wander (or even fly on your broom) to New England?

Yes, I am in the Toronto to Ottawa region for the summer. I do hope to be in MA later this summer to take a timber framing course at Heartwood School (I’d like to stay all summer and do all of their courses!) and a side trip to Concord would have to be on the agenda, so I will be close enough to come and say hi!
