I enjoy having water in my garden I enjoy the sound of a waterfall and I enjoy the fish in the pond. Most of the plants I have of the pond are water lilies, and plants to give off oxygen for the session.

Can I live in your yard? I know it must be tranquil. So beautiful. Is your pond in shade?

I like your use of pots here and there to fill in with color, you are truly a great gardener.

I would like to thank everyone for your comments I really appreciate them all. Some of you have some questions I will try to answer them.

Eklecticyou asked what size my pond was it’s about 5 feet wide and about 7 feet in length, it used to be bigger but we had problems with blue Heron coming in and eating the fish so reduce the size so we could put netting over it in the spring. A friend of mine had heard that if you mount a mirror near the pond would keep the heron away. So we mounted one last year and so far no blue heron showed up.

nativplantsrule you asked if he could come and live in my yard sure you can if you don’t mind helping with the garden chores.

Thank you!

Do you keep your fish in all winter and what kind of fish do you have?

As well, what growing zone are you in?

Eklectic The fish stay in the pond all year round, most of the fish are goldfish mostly fantail’s and assorted colored ones.In the winter I put a heater in the pond it keeps the pond from freezing completely. Also my growing zone is zone 7.

Here, they say the pond has to be 4’ deep so the fish have a place to “hibernate” for the winter. And then there needs to be a hole in the ice to let the gases escape.

MsDebbieP Yes, it is probably because your winters are much colder than ours, we get snow and our night’s can be down in the teen’s but not for long span. But I do keep a heater in the pond through the winter that keeps a whole in the ice just for the purpose of letting the gas escape. But I’ve been lucky they’ve been living there for about 25 years. I’ve had to replace some because sometimes some just dies, but one thing I learned was when I buy a fish I make sure to put a conditioner in the pond in case the new fish have a disease. That happened last year because I put the fish in and forgot the conditioner. I lost about five or six fish before I realized what the problem was, so I am very careful about that now.

good tip!!

Not sure what’s going to happen with our pond this year. I’d still like to get a deep enough one that our fish can stay outside.

My FIL used to put a heater in the one pond for what he claimed were Koi’s. When I found out the fish were actually 25 cent feeder fish (goldfish) I removed a dozen large goldfish and put them in a pond that wasnt heated…............in the spring all fish were fine.

Since then I have always unplugged his heater when they go to Florida for the winter and that has resulted in ZERO loss of fish. The biggest problem with goldfish is their prolific reproduction rates. I am going to assume that the the original school of 12 goldfish will number about 10,000 this spring which indeed will result in the complete collapse of the ponds eco system come August.

Just my 2 cent observation…...............zone 5a/5b

You have a lovely garden. We have an old fish pond which we need to replace on a different site this year.
The one we have is very formal, the one in my head is very much in keeping with the one you have.
I hope I can get it out of my head and sorted this year.

MsDebbieP, I remember seeing this before, and it is inspirational, Thank you for putting it on again, as probably I would never have found it again.
All we have to do now is start the digging.

no problem
It’s keeping me positive about expanding our pool this year… somewhere between Treefarmer’s huge pond area and Louisa’s pond is what ours will be like.. .’tis the plan.
