Pond Fish - Outside for the Winter

Jan 20/10

Well, here we are approaching the end of January and my fish are surviving their first winter outside in the pond!

In the one picture you can see all four of the fish (“Tim-fish” is on the left-hand edge of the photo and Jenn-fish, Goldie and #1 are on the right).
You will also see, in one of the photos, #1 swimming over to the de-icer – his favourite spot when the ice is partially open. I haven’t noticed him there when it is completely frozen over nor when it is completely thawed.

Glad to see that your fish have survived. You have only four fish in the pond or others are not seen the the pic?
My son and me have enjoyed breeding various aquarium fishes in the past and it was an exciting hobby. There was a time when I had around 80 fish tanks including small and big. Angels, Swoardtails, Kissing Gourami, Guppies, Siames Fighters, Tangerins, Black and Golden Mollies, Platies, Neon Tetra were some of the fish we kept. The climax was when my son successfully bred the Discus which at that time were considered very difficult to breed. Nice to remember those nostalgic moments after 25 years.

there are only the 4 .. unless the wee little babies are cuddled up in the bottom of the hole waiting for spring. I’ll know in a few months if they survived.
the pond isn’‘t very big so I don’t want many more.

they are pretty :)
And Rick’s eyes start to glaze over when he sees #1—he says that a fish that size would be great to catch on a flyrod .. .I have to keep my eye on him! lol (I’m sure he’s kidding… really… probably .. lol)

They look quite happy and healthy, MsDeb. Since they’ve survived this long, they certainly should be alright for the rest of winter. I think you have convinced me that a de-icer is the way to go. Have you noticed a big difference in you hydro bill?

I don’t know re: hydro . everything goes up in January.
I’d love to have one of those meters that tells you how much hydro an item uses.
