This winter I harvested these healthy eggplant fruit also called brinjal or aubergine on my terrace garden. One fruit is kept on the plant to get seeds for the next crop. This variety (Long purple, Sakata Seed Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd.) is resistant to some of the pests common to this plant..
Following is one recipe of eggplant fruit in case you get all the material at your place. The fruit should be of a longer variety than a round. Cut the fruit in thin circular slices about two to three mm thick. Apply a little turmeric powder and salt and keep for about half an hour to moisten. Take sufficient gram flour(Besan) and add a little salt, asafoetida powder and red chilli powder. Dip the slices in the flour on both sides and shallow fry in any cooking oil till brownish on both sides. (Salt, chilli powder and asafoetida should be added carefully to suit your taste.) They are delicious as a side dish. Gram flour, turmeric powder and asafoetida powder should be available in any Asian or Indian shop. Asafoetida has a strong smell. You have to develop taste for it. Both turmeric and asafoetida have immence medicinal value. Be careful before adding salt to the flour because salt is already applied to the slices in the beginning.
Also seen is a picture of a variety of marigold bloom. This will be ideal for a hedge The last picture shows the worms grown in a container by feeding them with kitchen scrap. The worms keep the soil porous and their excreta enrich the soil in a variety of nutrients.

Sharad, thank you for posting pictures from your garden. They are especially appreciated because when I look out my windows, I see snow, snow, snow. The eggplants look delicious and the marigolds look bright and cheery. I will keep this recipe for when eggplants are in season here again. I am familiar with all the ingredients except asafoetida powder, but we have lots of Indian and Asian grocery stores in the Boston area where I can find it. Thanks for sharing some of your warmth with us!

Sharad, your eggplant does indeed look wonderful. My wife likes them, but I have not developed a positive taste for them. Perhaps I shall try your method.
What kind of marigold is that which grows like a hedge? Does it bloom all summer? Does it stand up to the wind? I have to rethink my gardens, as I am finding it more laborious than it used to, as my lower back weakens, and I have more difficulty getting upright. They used to call our age the golden years, but methinks the golden years was in our twenties and thirties, not our 60+’s

I sometimes just dip the slices in egg, then into flour and parmesean cheese…..then fry it, then salt and pepper….......yummy

LOL…...I had the same reaction, MsDeb. But I have to add, they do look healthy and a great addition to the garden. If I don’t see lots of worms when I dig in the garden in the spring, I know the soil is not healthy.
I have never developed a taste for eggplant but I think it is a beautiful fruit.

jroot I am not absolutely sure about this variety as I got the plant from my neighbour who is not sure either about the variety. But it looks to be Red Cottage. It blooms all summer but is sensitive to frost. It can stand wind to quite a good extent. Its strong smell is repellent to many pests and so it is planted near vegetable plants.
I feel bad about your lower back weakness. I recommend you to read the book “Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth” by Peter Kelder, Doubleday Edition, ISBN 0-385-49162-X. After you read it give me a PM for further instructions. This month I will complete 75 and my aging is retarding.

My favourite way to eat eggplant is in Baba Ghanouj. I just love that stuff on pita bread.

Debbie the book is really interesting and we are practising the rites given in them with unbelievable results.

Bon, Baba Ghanouj is very similar to the popular recipe Baingan Bharta and is prepared in different parts of the country with local variations. It is very delicious and I will post the recipe in the proper season.

Sharad , cool post. I recently also read your previous post on chilies – we took a trip to new mexico this summer and tested some out – we were introduced to ‘christmas’ at the restaurants – mix of green and red chilies in dishes. May I ask where you live – somewhere with no snow? Nice pile o worms. :)

soobee thanks for your comments on my posts. I stay in no snow zone. The minimum temp in winter varieS from 5 to 13 C. Summer is a bit harsh, max temp reaches to about 40 C. Rainy season lasts for about 3 months. Average rainfall being 25”.
