First Day of Summer Fruit

Project by Rog posted 439 days ago 571 views 0 times favorited 26 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Ah today is the first day of summery shared with fathers day, what a nice combination…....Well I went out to the strawberry patch and picked these. I have a 4’x4’ patch and have about 10 times more left to pick. After 4 years the strawberries are producing none stop. The same thing is happening with the Rubbarb that I dug up from my grandfather place that is about 30years old. So in the spirit of summary my wife is making strawberry/rubbarb cobbler….....Yummy….........

Aside from one sunny day we had raid straight for over 2 weeks. Sunday, father’s mday, was no excception, rained all day..
My Rhubarb is doing well but the strawberries are soggy, again. I think I will till them under this year and do something else with that spot.

Yours look fantastic, when you get that cobbler ready let me know I’ll bring the ice cream. :-)

Bon,
Rog isn’t tilling them under I am. Been growing for 4 years and all I get are soggy fruit.
I have them in a nice place and they get full sun and the plants look fantastic tall and green. Fruit is lousy, I would be happier if the birds ate them at least someone was enjoying them.
I just ate my first raspberry the other day. I am sure there are lots for me today. I have the ones that produce all summer till Oct/Nov. Makes the best jam. Can’t pick them fast enough and the birds never bother them, but my dog loves them as I pick its some for the basket and some for him. He waits patiently. :-)

NOthing like strawberry, rhubard cobbler or even a crisp. I grew up on that good stuff.

It is very satisfying to get into that first harvest.

Thanks for sharing.

In my old house I used to grow it. My sister-in-law lived next door. She loved it also but just cooked up with sugar like jelly.
One day I made jelly for myself and offered her some, I remember going right over with the hot hot mix and she just gobbled it up so hot . Now you went and made me want some, is it in the store yet? Mine is young and I can’t pick any this year yet, is that true?

Definitely in the stores in our neck of the wood. Strawberries are just starting now, and rhubarb has been up for a while.

Well Bon … nice to know OTHER’S have “senior moments” and just not me—hahahaha!!! Did that on another thread; just have to laugh at yourself sometimes. ;-)

Rog … got the first tomato off our plant today AND, a critter got to it before we did. Nibbled the bottom. BUMMER, so now we will have to wait for some of the other’s to “red up”.

If Granny from The Beverly Hillbillies could make possum pie, surely you could do something with your critters. LOL

those are nice berries!
We had a handful yesterday. Soon.. really soon.. I’ll be able to pick them by the box :)

I’ll be buying some this week to put in my dehydrator. We won’t have enough from our garden to eat fresh AND store for the winter.

Well GrandmaT if 53 is senior then I’m a senior I just turned 49 last month…..Ms D we get berries here in the stores grown in California but they have no taste so I must grow my own. Problem is that they rarely make it a few days after being picked ie strawberry cheese cake lastnight. I couldn’t wait to make the strawberry/rubbarb cobbler and man was it good. Dillon my lab, wife and I ate the whole thing lastnight..LOL. :-}

My mother used to make me pick berries for the family . I bet I have picked 1000 lbs of strawberries and raspberries and probably ate 500 lbs in the process. I have real trouble finding any satisfaction from those California giants.
Cantaloupe is a different story. I want to be buried in a California cantaloupe!

I love your strawberries. Every one of them look perfect, just like my profile. I’ve had only about 3 from my vertical patch so it’s nice to see how a big bowlful looks.

Do strawberries need a lot of care? I was thinking of putting in a couple or more plants next year and wonder if they would be low maintenance? Let me know so I can decide. Thank you, strawberry experts. I really learned how to make the awesome dessert cobbler in Texas. So many kinds-all fruit ones are delicious. But I enjoy them in the fall and in the winter the best. They are comforting and warm. Thanks for the memories, but winter ones can wait!

Cynthia the only care that I have found that strawberries need is to be watered at ground level ie. never water from the top or late in the evening. This will envite slugs to feed on them. Also don water to much because it can cause moldy strawberry. Hope that you get lots of berrys. Rog

Rosewood513: You could always leave some beer out to keep away the slugs-it’s supposed to deter them from eating plants! Some of the guys may think it’s a waste of beer. And who wants drunk slugs in their yard?
Rog: Don’t you have to mulch strawberries? They sound so easy to grow. I think I’ll give them a try next year. The plants themselves are expensive to me anyway-anywhere from $10 and higher for small plants.

I’ll be harvesting off my day neutrals till frost.. Love strawberries.. Really need to re plant them in better soil though so they produce more.

I’ve never tried Rubbarb [eaten or grown]... I think I’ll grow some out next year, if even just for the looks.
