June 4/09
I haven’t decided what to call this sculpture other than “the post”.
Yesterday, Rick cut up an old telephone pole (that I have had on my property for about 15 years). He is using the main section for a birdhouse post (I’ll upload some photos in the near future) and he needed to cut a section off it to make it the right height.
He was going to cut it into chunks for firewood (Gasp)... “no no no—this can be used for something”. (notice the packrat dialogue!)
When he brought the section up and put it on the deck to show me, it was instantly a piece of art in my eyes. I fell in love with it right then.
Over the next hour I moved it to several spots, trying to find the place where it belonged. Nothing was showing off its beauty like that initial “plunk onto the deck” did. Sitting there on its own it was so powerful. However, it was right in the line of a pathway and would have been knocked over every day. Couldn’t keep it there.
Finally, it settled on the current location by the house. It is hiding the place where the propane line enters the house and it sits behind a cactus that I got from Iris at last year’s GT Gathering. Right now remnants of some daffodils are blocking the cactus from view. (Until yesterday there was a bush there but it wasn’t growing well so I moved it to a new location and put the cactus in its place. I will wait and see if the cactus likes its new spot.)
Anyway, back to the sculpture. When I sit on the deck I look at “the post” and am amazed at the beauty in it and the pleasure that I get from looking at it. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. :)

A nice setting for a large draping, flowering plant, MsDeb. It is a very strong statement by itself.

I see a “Green Man” with a draping, viny-type plant flowing down around his face.

I kinda like it plain … could maybe a hint of color underneath or some sort of ivy started. Either way, it is indeed a piece of art; and I can see why you were attracted to it. Same thing with that Flower Cart that Russel made. He saw nothing but trash and failure … where I saw a funky, wonderful piece for my garden … pieces of wood lovingly put together for me. There is so much to see in our world if you take the time to let you “heart” see it.

Try one or two of these Deb. I make em from telephone poles and or log ends.
All you need is a chisel and a router.
I know how you love routers! bzzzzz!
It can be done by hand… I think. ;-)

very impressive Bob.. hmmmm :)
lots of great ideas! :)
I’m probably just going to put some mulch around the bottom (to keep the weeds down). About 3 feet away is a lovely patch of periwinkle. Hopefully it will spread down around the sculpture… I might just have to help it some :)

Speaking of Periwinkle … did I tell you MsDeb that upon a visit to the “old homestead” I noticed that the Periwinkle and other ground covers were slowly returning to the beds that “crazy fall clean up guy” ... cleaned up. Sure put a smile on my face cuz what is coming back looks so nice and healthy.
Periwinkle will look lovely surrounding that sculpture … :-)

yah, I hear ya … encouraging though to see a little more each year …
Sidenote … off to our very good friends’ tonight for dinner, a bit of Euchre and to sit around their firepit and watch/listen to the lake that is practically off their backdoor … no, not me … I’m not envious of the lake or firepit …;-)

I had some 6×6 cut offs from treated post. i cut 1-16’, 1-24”, 1-32” tall. I staggered them together with potted plants on top, all had trailers and height along with some wide fillers. They look great, they took up a lot of visual space. think about it

LOL. That would be cute.
Where MsDebbie lives though, rather than a Pelican on top, maybe a heron watching her fish in her pond. If it is big enough, maybe it would scare away the real herons. If it is too cute though, maybe it would attract the big male herons. LOL

oh that’s a great idea. I have a cement heron statue at the pond. I think it would look great beside the post!
Thanks for the great idea follow3/jroot
