Abuse Resistant

Project by Russel posted 475 days ago 427 views 0 times favorited 18 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I recently made a plant stand (the first picture) and when I was done the Mrs. asked, “Where are you going to put that?” in a tone that clearly conveyed a “not in my house” conclusion. Picking up on her subtlety I said, “It’s for my office.” (I’m not as dumb as I look)

The only problem was that I did not have any plants in my office (reading my profile will answer why). So, while at the Farmers Market I noticed these little guys that were advertised as “Abuse Resistant” and they looked kinda cool. I eagerly ran to find the Mrs to share my discovery.

She said, those are succulents (sp?) and they don’t need a lot of attention, to which I responded, “Can I have some …. PLEASE?????” She consented and we chose 5 that seemed rather spiffy.

When we got them home, my loving spouse filled a planter I had made with dirt and arranged the new plants in a most artistic manner. Understand that they did not look as they do now when we brought them home. Instead, they were like little balls with the leaves tightly packed together.

After a day in their new home, they relaxed, let their guard down and spread out. That was kinda cool. And this past Monday I took my rejected plant stand and my new plants in my plant box to the office and set them somewhere within walking distance of a window.

In the next three days things started poking out from the plants. Little explorers peaking from under the leaves checking to see if it was safe outside. They were everywhere and going strong. Needless to say I was quite surprised and just a little bit giddy.

I took some pictures to show the Mrs and then she kicked me in the shin and said, “You better post those on GardenTenders.” So I am. It’s been a week and they haven’t died ... For me, that’s a success.

Lovely little chickies, Russel, and the Mrs and the tag were right. They don’t need much water, or a lot of light, and they look very happy in their pretty new planter on their very own stand!

Well Russel, you thought they were harmless little plants, but now you’re going to find out!..................You’re hooked. You will be obsessed bf you know it! You won’t be able to leave them, no more holidays….. you have to plant sit, you will be counting the ‘babies’ and noting every new accomplishment. Oh yea, they got you now. LOL

All kidding aside, the planter is beautiful as is the table. Obviously perfect for your choice of plants….they love it. Nice!

Truth be told, she didn’t really kick me in the shins. And, she didn’t not like the table, it just doesn’t fit her style. I never actually disliked plants, we just didn’t always see eye to eye. However, I must admit a certain pleasure seeing things popping out.

Beautiful stand!!! Love it.

Now, take Iris’ wisdom (you are indeed hooked and will be wanting more) and you will need to follow Mario’s advice and add a shelf to hold the next stage of your plant family.

Congratulations on the success and the beautiful addition to your office.

Well sweetie the plants look really good and I too am quite fascinated with all “new growth” and spreading out. As you know I haven’t grown these … so be very fun to watch and hear your “reports” after work. Look at you … a gardener!!!! ;-)

And I agree with Mario and the others (as you know), I think the table is very beautiful and the table top actually magnificient (too bad no picture of that) ... but the table as a whole has a “modern/asian” feel to it … and my taste is “country/rustic/antique” ... but it looks GREAT in your office!! ;-)

Nice mix of hens and chicks Russel. They grow like weeds.I threw a bunch of them under my cedar tree border last year and just left them to fend for themselves and the silly things are still living. (lol)

Just in case anyone is interested, or in the mood to be as surprised as I am, here is how the plants look today.

It seems they’re alive and looking to take over. I’m keeping my eyes open for pods and making sure I don’t doze off just in case.

No green thumb here. My view has always been that I’ll leave them alone and they can leave me alone. They are not keeping their end of the bargain.

Bon, so that is what they are called. I have heard of them before, but didn’t know what they looked like. It really is something to watch them grow and change before your eyes.

I still cannot believe you have PLANTS in your office honey. We may “hook” ya yet -vbg-

Chicks and Hens are indeed almost indestructible.. They thrive in brighter light.. The only way to kill them is to drown them, like I did. ;)

Anything in the Sedum family would be good for you to grow, what, with your brown thumb and whatnot.. Might just turn green after all.. Else you’ve always got wood to play with. :)

I think I’ll stick to the shop and leave the Mrs. her domain. Besides gardening requires being outdoors.
