April 17. 2009
This morning as I was chatting with Rick I noticed a lot of bird activity through the window. What was going on? Was it that darned grackle, again, ripping apart birds’ nests?
And then I noticed that it was a robin hopping around the antlers that are attached to our shed. “Hmmm,” I thought, “could it be?”
I asked Rick to turn around (he was sitting by the window) and see if the robin was building a nest in the antlers. Sure enough, there she/he was sitting on the antlers busily pulling and pushing pieces of grass.
I hope that our use of the shed doesn’t make them move, although I’m sure that a few bangs of the screen door and they’ll be building somewhere else. Maybe, just maybe, we can remember to close the door gently and quietly and not disturb the parents-to-be.
(Picture quality is poor – they were taken just past sunrise and then my battery ran out so I only got the three photos).
Picture 4: the second nest (first one fell apart or was pulled apart). The parent is diligently keeping watch.

I’ve added a fourth picture.
Rick put a stick across the antler to create a better nesting area (after the fate of the first nest). It wasn’t long before a second nest was built.
The robins are very cautious and fly away as soon as they seen anyone in the yard. I was able to sneak this close before she noticed me and flew away. (I’m hiding behind a tree and poking the camera through the branches).

MsDeb, she is beautiful! Is it exciting to watch these wonderful birds work on raising a family?
I seem to have several roaming cats in the neighbourhood this year, so the birds are hesistant to build here. Usually I have robins, wrens, sparrows and even blue jays high in my pine tree. That is the only explanation that I can think of. I found a pile of blue jay feathers near the feeders, so you can’t blame the birds for being leery. I have put down the granular, Scat, and it works for acouple days but we’ve had so much rain, it doesn’t stay effective long. :-(

one day I was sitting by the pond and after a while I noticed that she was at her nest. I sat and watched her for a bit and then decided to get the camera. She stayed on her nest the entire time – until I brought the camera out and then bye-bye birdy.
Camera shy I guess.

it’s been fun to watch. At first it was just one tiny little beak that could be seen, then the top of a head and then this stage—they are all stretching for first dips on supper!

I have a nest of Robins, in my new lilac tree, just beside my front door. When they hatch, I’ll get a shot of them. I am still trying desperately to get a shot of the pair of great crested fly catchers who are nesting in my castle birdhouse.

every morning now we check and count heads. We are always afraid one will have fallen out and gotten cat-napped.
This morning, all was well. Yippee.
We came inside for a while, checked the news etc and when we went back out they had all flown the coop!! Bye-bye birdies.
:)

Isn’t it amazing how fast they grow and are gone!? You were lucky to have them where you could watch their progress. Now you will go through “empty nest syndrome”- – - – I’m not kidding, you will really miss their little heads and beaks showing up to be counted. Hopefully the parents will keep around your yard and gardens to continue to feed them. They are fun to watch as they do their little ‘feed me first’ dance with their wings vibrating. I’m always glad I’m not a bird parent as those little ones pester their parents for the first worm.

It is sad for now, but as Robins do lay eggs a few times a year, you will most probably have new eggs in there before long!!
