Heres the shade garden, its really filtered more then anything, each year since before I even moved it (when Andy and I were just dating) him and I have tried something over here, we battle with the pecan tree leaves and each year they have won so I’m trying to think of a different battle plan this year, I would love to have a small pond infront of this bird bath maybe have it flow from the bird bath to the pond…boy I’m great at planning things, but its always the follow through that kicks me. :D

andy’s parents, him, and myself, carried all these rocks from the front yard, the bird bath was made my digging a shallow hole in the ground and pouring concrete in it, then lifting it out and flipping it over.

Hmmmm…Shade and leaves? Not to rain on your parade ;) but this is probably not the best location for a pond. Ponds do need sunlight and you’ll be doing an awful lot of pond cleaning. What about a naturalized shade garden with plants that like the leaf mulch?...crocus and the like for color grape hyacinth with give you a pond-like blue around your birdbath. Just a suggestion.

Also Ferns (so many pretty varieties now!), Hostas, Astilbies too … all pernnials that love dappled sunlight/shade and “mulch” and can naturalize the area as well.

Kudos on the bird bath … I can see all the hard work that was involved. Bird baths/ponds totally intimidate (sp?) me … so I have great respect for folks like you that are successful in creating one.

my first thought was: if you can’t beat it, don’t fight it…. how can you USE it to your advantage.

the bird bath is wonderful. I like the idea of it flowing down into a pond.

I am convinced that almost every plant on earth loves a little shade, especially when the sun is at its strongest.

Ponds need both sun and shade. Too much sun and the pond turns into a green pea soup. Not enough sun and the lillies wont bloom. Fish need oxygen and plants need CO2….....its all about balance. It pays to do a lot of research.

Cheers

On the birdbath: are those stones simply dry-stacked, or do you have some mortar in there?
