Ta Da.
We have our teepee almost finished. We still have to create a door flap that will open and close easily.
Every month we have a “bonfire breakfast” with family and I have now begun a monthly Sunrise Gathering that will take place in our new teepee.
Since we have our bonfire breakfasts in blizzards and rain storms it has always been a fun time putting up protection from the elements that allowed cooking over the fire as well as kept our guests warm and dry.
Although we could sit in our gazebo, this option keeps us away from the fire and usually divided into two groups.
Our new teepee will keep us all in one place and, for the most part, – dry. (Until of course we get our first big wind storm and then who knows what will happen.) We didn’t really know what we were doing, other than having the general idea of what a teepee looks like.
Anyway… here she is, the newest creation in our backyard.

The people of the Nehiyawok would call that a Tipis.
Nice job for a “Huron” <vbg>
Needs more poles and buffalo skins

yah, Bob.. I said “12 poles”... Rick said “we’re using 6”. I said “ok”, since he was doing the work.
I’d love to have cloth or, better yet, hides, but alas, there are limitations that we had to work within—$$ haa
as for a yurt.. I’d thought about it but a teepee “feels” right for my spiritual gatherings.

I know buffalo hides are pretty hard to come by but what about birch bark?I kinda had to laugh at the see through plastic MsD.I hope Rick anchored it real good. But really all that matters is if it works. :-)

I knew people would be shaking their heads at the plastic but it was cheaper than tarps and more available than any other product.
the size is perfect. We have room for about 10 people to sit around the fire and we still have room for a couple tables behind us to hold meal supplies.
We like it, it serves the purpose and that’s what matters.

you are right GramT. It is sitting where our pool usually sits.
The firepit works so well in there, especially with it sitting on sand. I’m not sure what I’ll do in when it’s time to put up the pool.
1) no pool
2) move the tipi (yikes… the thought.. but then maybe the wind will have taken it down for us by then)

Neat, but how are you anchoring the plastic down? Can you add a top flap to protect from rain/snow and help keep the warm air in?
I have my pond & greenhouse structure covered with plastic and everything is anchored with rocks & cinder blocks. I allow an 8-10” length to drape over the ground to anchor this down. If taunt and anchored well, the wind doesn’t bother it, but any air leakage will cause it to billow and tear apart.

we stapled through a piece of cardboard/layers of plastic into the poles.
We couldn’t reach the top with the stapler so it is stretching and drooping but we plan to wrap a tarp around the top and use rope to pull it tight as needed.
When we get some snow again we plan on packing snow around the base and watering it down so it becomes a rim of ice to secure the bottom.
We had high winds again this morning and it’s holding up quite well. We are surprised.

Hi Deb:
The old timers would attach the “outer cover” to the last pole on the Tipis and then raise it. That way they got the cover up to the top without the use of a ladder and could control the opening for the smoke by moving the last pole back or forward.
It’s always a good idea to face the vent opposite to the way the wind normally blows too.
Have fun!

oh we’re having fun!!
That would work if we had a one-piece cover. But, perhaps we could use the idea on the “scarf” that we are going to make for the top. Then we can rotate it, based on the wind direction.. hmmm .
When we win the lottery, we’ll purchase a cloth covering and have it made into one piece to wrap around the “12 pole” tipi that we’ll make to replace this one :D
My daughter was telling friends the other night about coming home to a tipi in the backyard and having supper over the fire inside. She got a lot of blank looks, “crazy looks” and some “cool” comments.

Well one can keep hoping … guess morning will tell …
We had the winds earlier today; and to be honest things that I expected to “blow” did not and other items did; like my wooden bench on the front porch. It toppled over, but yet our plastic trash cans out back didn’t move at all. Soooo, your teepee could be just fine come morning. :-)

3-4 days of 100 km/hour winds and the tipi sure took a beating.
Still standing though and the plastic is still attached although it is pretty droopy.
We have to get it fixed back up before the 17th (next Sunrise Gathering).
We might have to take it all down and re-do it… maybe even adding some more poles :)
doubt if that will happen before the 17th.
Anyway…. 100 km winds and we still have a tipi. I’m impressed.

hydro-electric power… aka Niagara Falls is the primary source of most of our power. Does that work? If it doesn’t I’d have to research to find the real answer.
