This year I decided to eliminate some of the ornamental to enjoy some Melons, eggplant, peppers, tomato’s, squash, basil and pumpkins. I don’t remember when i have done so many different things. I started some things from seed and some from bands that I bought at the local nursery. I found antique varieties in catalogs and i just planted till I ran out of room. I’ll take more pictures when I’m not tending it but it has been so much fun it’s hard to break away to get the camera. I work in a nursery for 15 years where I taught many gardeners to garden. I rarely had my own garden cause i was so tired when i got home from work it was the last thing I wanted to do was go out and hold a hose. I retired as nursery manager 3 years ago and became a Bug Trapper for the department of Agriculture. It’s a job I love. I can’t tell you how much fun I have chasing bugs. I have learn a lot about the cycle of bugs. I decided this year it was time to garden, I can’t wait to get home from work to work in it. I wanted to share some pictures of it. It’s still developing but it’s already producing a lot.

great story.
Love the look of your gardens. The layout is interesting – not just rectangles or rows, is it.
The plants look really healthy. Impressive.
Can’t wait to see more

Thanks everyone. I live in the central valley of California. It’s is the heartland of many crops. I was the agriculture advisor for the local 4-H kids here and taught lots of kids to cultivate a garden. This project is really just a work in progress I call it defer maintence, for all the years I worked long hours and just didn’t have the time. It is my passion and I had forgotten how it makes me feel. I couldnt believe the success rate of my seeds in the green house. I use goat manure for fertilizer that has alfafa meal from the goats crushing it as they eat. We are high in salt in this area so I was a little afraid to use it but it’s working beautiful. I’m zone 14 in the western garden book, and zone 9 on the USDA. I hope that helps. I can’t wait to read more about what you’re all up too. I never expected messages back so soon. Again thanks so much and I’ll keep posting pictures. I must say my little gate with cucumbers of all kinds is my favorite little spot.

Your garden looks like it’s a lot of fun to tend—-you know it’s very addictive. (but you already know that)

How does the heat down there affect your watering schedule?
I was wondering how you manage being out of most of the day.

it’s busy in the garden this time of year when the temps reach 110. I actually love my job so much it’s easy to be out there. I work in the nursery and really enjoyed that. I’m so lucky to have gotten to work at my passion for so long.

I like the combination of ornamentals and vegetables. Well done. Actually, I find any of the veggies have really neat flowers. Some of them are even edible themselves. Some of the flowers are edible as well. Just don’t plant datura or brugmansia with them LOL
