Brewster the Rooster and his ladies arrived yesterday! Yes, I know I said he was backorder, but when I went to pick up the birds, there he was.
So, I brought the crate in the coop and “helped” them get out!! Another surprise: 2 eggs.
At 6 am, I open the chicken door to let them out! And waited and waited!
Around 9.30am, as I am working close to the coop, I see a little head peaking out! My dog Bear was mesmerized! Neither one was moving! And then…my big Charlie arrived (blond lab) and starts crying wanting to go play!!
The chicken got scared right out of the coop and the rooster came barrelling out to defend her!
At that point, Bear is back up on the weep field, barking, and I am telling Charlie to go join her!
As we walk back to the house, I turn around to check things and here is my handsome rooster marching back and forth in front of the coop!
And got 2 more eggs!

I love it. I used to raise chickens many years ago. There is nothing like a FRESH egg, where the yolk stands up and says, “Here I am. Come and get it.”

that is a great story… and doesn’t he look proud—he’s doing his job of protecting and keeping those big ol’ dogs away from the ladies. lol

Brewster the rooster has 4 new ladies! Not all is fine in the coop but 3 out of 4 are know “accepted”!
The dark one loves to be petted!
They are free ranging about half of the day and today, they came knocking at the front door:

Just drove the cats crazy!
And, we get a lot of different size of eggs :

And the big one was a double yolked one:

So four more ladies joining the group … that is wonderful!! Now how will you get the 4th gal to be accepted? This is so foreign to me …

Yes, 2 were accepted right away, then the 3rd one (the very dark one in the picture) last week and now hoping that the last one will be pretty soon as she is quite miserable: not only do 2 of the older hens pick on her, the rooster chases her all over the yard to peck at her!!
GranT, this is also very foreign to me! I was told to wait and let nature do it’s stuff!

Yes, X, sometimes they do pick on the weak one. However, I remember one hen that I had that was constantly picked on, but she was my best layer. .... every day, and sometimes twice. Who knows?

X,
She is now the thinnest one as well as “shy”! When we got her she was the same size as the other 3. She still is not laying so I will have to see.
Things are better, they are not as bad with her as they were, but still, the 2 “bullies” are on her case!!!
One interesting tidbit here, my favorite one, the very dark one, keeps her company in the coop as well as when they are free roaming!!

well it is a very good sign that she has a buddy…be sure that she is getting enogh to eat and maybe crush a clove of garlic and add to their waterer just to boost immunity.

Maybe she is getting more of the “good stuff” and the others are jealous. Who knows in the minute mind of a chicken. LOL
Interesting idea about the garlic. If the others get too close, she can breath on them. LOL
Seriously, a good idea.
