This is my Baby, while its new to me, its always been home to my fiance. We bought this house from his parents last march. My challange is that I have sandy soil, little imagination and a blank canvas. I’m 25, I started gardening when I was about 16 years old, when I was a senior in high school. When I lived at home, my mom and I bought all kinds of bulbs, planted them…and waited…and waited, how pretty the yard was in april through may, after that…nothing. Ok we must buy more then bulbs next year. We bought a few more bulbs, and some pretty annuals, different year same result. Then we discovered my now favorite…perennials. Part of me dreds building a yard from scratch again. When I go to my moms house its nice to look at it now that its established. I can’t wait to say that about this place. We’ve been clearing the brush in the back yard. Next March we plan to have north and east side fenced in with a privacy fence. Finacials permitting of course :) we’ve added the apple tree and the crepe myrtle to the north side in the back yard, you may be able to seem them in the pictures. In the front I tranplanted my moms “dwarf crepe myrtles” (they’re about six feet tall…) My neice and I planted them at moms house 6 years ago, when my neice was just old enough to walk. But they have never bloomed. So last year, my neice was seven and we bought this house, so her and I dug them up (my mom is still a little sore that they lied about being dwarf crepes…so it was save them or they were going to meet the fate of my step dads chain saw) and brought them over here. They bloomed a beautiful pink. From the road it looked like cotton candy tufts all over it, like it had all those blooms bottled up for the last 6 years :D Of done a little more here and there but I didn’t take pictures like I should have. So anyway…here it is.

Picture 1…our lovely rock drive way :/ thats sage and oleader (which refuses to bloom!) on the right side of the drive way, on the left side of the magnolia is the crepe myrtle I was talking about…you can’t see the other one in front of it, we planted two more red ones after this.
Picture 2…the main reason for the privacy fence we want. on the left is our granny smith apple tree. I’ve been told I don’t need a second one for it to produce is this true? thats the tree I just planted the black and white garden around. Its grown a bit since this pic was taken in march.
Picture 3… is is the first thing I did. Its filled with pansies now. but here it was red geraniums and all kinds of caladiums. and my fave blue plumbago. all those rocks were hauled from the front yard. Don’t know where they came from but they’ve been here for as long as Andy’s lived here.

What a cute house!!!! You have been busy. Have you considered the many, many different and beautiful Daylilies that are available? Some bloom early summer, some mid summer and some late summer. They LOVE sun and heat and don’t require much care at all. Perfect perennial in my mind. Wish you lived closer, I could give you pieces from all of mine.
I loved your Crepe Myrtle story!!!! And what is wonderful about you transplanting it to your house is, everytime you look at it you will think of your mom. I have several plants from my grandfather … they bring smiles to my face …

granny smith… oh yummy… can’t help you re: need for second one.
it will look lovely with your b/w garden around it.
i love rocks as borders. We got a whole bunch from Rick’s boss’ house. So far we’ve used them as a path. Wasn’t my original intention but that’s what’s happened, so far anyway.

Wonderful! The blank canvases are a beautiful opportunity, and can be intimidating. Sounds like you’ve got willing helpers with your mom and niece, which is also great. Good luck with your projects!
We use rock borders also…easy, cheap and quick to build!

I think it’s great. You have the opportunity to turn it into your own little paradise. I like the crepe myrtles and the story too!
Good luck with your new project.
