Photo #1 is a patio view of the new raised panel gate door.
Photo #2 is a close-up of the new gate door.
Photo #3 is the old broken door.
One of the projects on my husband’s “Honey Do List” was building a new backyard gate door. When we bought this house not quite two years ago, we had decided that gate door would need to be replaced at some point. It wasn’t high on “our” (okay I mean hubby’s) list because it was functional; just ugly. The gate door doesn’t really serve any other purpose than to hide our neighbor’s less than attractive side yard and to keep their dog and his “gifts” out of our yard.
During one of the last winter storm’s, the gate door came crashing down … so then … you guessed it; this project just got moved up on the ol’ list.
So here it is, a beautiful Cedar raised panel gate door, lovingly made for me by my wonderful “Lumberjock” husband. The improvement is beyond words and has added a whole lot of charm to “my” backyard patio retreat.
THANK YOU Honey!!!

Holy cow, that IS perdy for sure! He needs to come over and build me some carriage house doors for my workshop.
Darn wind ripped one of the crappy doors off it’s hinge and I still have yet to getting to fix it.
Next weekend is going to be a home project time. NOTHING is going to be done outside.. The clumps we have yet to choose a place for are being put into a temp location along the back by the garden to keep them safe. Moving on to other jobs and will handle that next year.

Thank you for all your lovely comments … Hubby (as he says) “threw together” this door in a day. It was exciting to watch it being “created” step by step. AND, I do love that the door makes such a “statement” in the small space I have.

Scott, funny you say that … I was just telling him that IF we were staying here I would love for him to build similar panels for along the little bit of fence that is showing behind my Zinnia garden. Wouldn’t that just be gorgeous. He just LAUGHED at me …
Actually I think he might have considered it IF we were planning on staying here … so this idea goes in the “what if” pile along with the massive garden I would be planting where ALL our backyard grass is. :-)

LOL… Laughed at you.. How cruel..
I can understand though.. No point in going THAT far if you’re not sticking around. The gate in itself is a big equity gain. Curb appeal / back yard livability are big items. Almost as big as kitchens and baths.

Nah … just “silly girl” what are you thinking … LOL!!!!
I agree with you. The yards around here are small … (an attraction for us) so that anything you can do to add more appeal is a plus. The community is known for it’s charming older homes and established neighborhoods. When we first saw this place, I/we just fell in love with it … built in 1923 and is a Sears and Roebuck house and came with all that “old” charm. The yard was very sterile, but neat (as I know you saw in posted pics) when we bought it; but I/we have been fixing that … been fun making this little house ours. I know you understand that.

Cool, so it’s an old Sears catalog house then. My understanding is those are dying out. I think Sears was the very first place to do catalog houses and actually have a kind of mass production on them.
I’d read up on them a while back, really cool stuff.
Oh it’s been a blast making this place “ours”.. Though projects are still piled up. Going to end up pulling back from posting for a while and redoing my time management to get things settled.
It’s hard shuffling time with a 2 year old in the picture. Tend to be able to do the most work, when the most quiet is needed… Makes for not alot of work to be done, with the exception of the outside stuff.
Really do love what you’d been doing. It’s been sharp and the container gardening, though not my thing, is the best way to go for sure for your home.
I just don’t do well with containers.. Kinda disheartening some times.. Oh well.. Least the orange isn’t dead, yet. ;)

You and hubby make such a good team: the curb appeal has grown by at least 500% since you first started “dreaming”!
He is quite talented! Nice craftsmanship!
Showed it to my hubby who was quite impressed!

Thank you, I will pass along all your nice comments to my wonderful hubby!!!
Hahah, no sitting by the “new gate door today” ... cuz it is gonna storm … I hear the thunder now. But tomorrow is another day! :-)
And thanks Scott … I am loving the transformation … each little thing. When we moved in here, I did a whole research thing on the Sears and Roebuck houses. They are very cool and hard to find now. AND, also found out that when this house was built there was a stream several lots down from us …

Hmmmmm, might battle a mosquito or two for “waterfront” ... but alas with the kids all out West, it will be more of a mountain view with a yard full of “crushed granite”. But I will take the sounds of laughter from our children and grandchildren over the lapping of a lake any day. LOL!!!

put a bucket in the ground and run a fountain and voila – waterfront property!! Laughter of children definitely wins out, hands down.

OH how I wish I had your husband’s brains to pick when I was building a door for the screened in area under the deck. I had a lot to learn about reinforcement. Yours looks good.
If you are worried about mosquitoes from the water feature, put in a couple of feeder goldfish. I did that in my pond 5 years ago, and they are still alive….the fish that is. I don’t feed them so all they get to eat is algae ( my water is clear as a result ) and insects that are stupid enough to land on the water or leaves.
