I love the little house I designed for myself and DH but at the same time I like the 5 acres of land we own and would like to move there. The simple fact is while yes, I can slap a house on any lot but this house that I love is simply not suited to our 5 acres…..
Our 5 acres of land…a survey would be best but for now I’ll give you this…Picture a square. Along the bottom of the square is the road. The top right corner is the ocean view and is also the North. So the bottom left corner is the South. There is a Mountain view to the West. The land is level in the front for about 100ft (which I would like to keep treed) then slopes downward for the length of about 40 ft to a depth of -12ft then plateaus off again. This would make an ideal setting for a backdrop home with ground level entry of an 8’ basement on the back.
I would like a house with the following features:
-Compact in footprint (Main floor under 1000sqft)
-Full 8’ foundation
-Main level entry at front to the east.
-High pitch roof 12/12 with a loft bedroom/living area
-I want the eastern morning sun to shine in the kitchen, with a covered patio off the kitchen for breakfasts outside.
- The west side of the house will be the “non-attractive” side entrance for hanging laundry so I will need a laundry closet/room, WIC and 1/2 bath in this foyer.
- All other sides of the home (Front back and east(right))must be attractive as the front is on the road, the east will be where our driveway enters and the north will be visible to the entire town below.
-I need southern windows for sun yet northern windows for the view.
-Master bedroom and ensuite would be best on the main floor but acceptable in the loft.
-Master ensuite must have double french doors to a private patio with a north to west view.
- A large covered patio to give the Northern ocean view.
- I would also like to incorporate a courtyard at the rear entry of the basement…sadly this is on the north side so consideration of allowing as much western and eastern sun has to be taken.
-The courtyard can incorporate the detached garage (with loft (12/12 roof) and detached garden sunshed as exterior walls enclosing the courtyard.
I am working on Chief Architect but have yet to perfect my plan…perhaps some of you great minds can help with ideas/sketches.
I will post some of my progress on a design.
UPDATE: First draft (showing easterly trapizoids) but there is somthing still too “messy” about the design. I will give you a peek at the floorplan tomorrow.

“XO” if your current home is any indication of what you design … this house is going to be absolutely gorgeous!! This is so out of my element, but found reading this very exciting. You have already put so much thought into this … Big job designing a home; but I imagine one that would bring much pleasure. Please DO post the progress. I look forward to reading more on this thread …

Well, I decided not to respond to this post because I would start telling you what to do, how to do it, etc. etc. I could easily give you 15,347 ideas ….wait….. make that 15,348.
I used to use Cheif Arch. but, since I no longer build houses, I switched to TurboCad.
If I were to build a house now [from scratch] it wouldn’t be anything like I’ve ever built before.
Same as wood working. I’ve learned so much about so much that my views on everything have almost done a 180.
What I could put on that property..!!!!!!!

Out here we build for the afternoon and evening sun.
Unless you are home alot and you don’t barbeque you may be dissapointed with your main view???

I am home all day. Still I would like to have evening sun (westerly) through the courtyard.

I love those cobb or “hobbit” homes Catspaw…would make a neat garden getaway but I like living high up and I need to take advantage of the view. Excellent site and those homes are amazing not to mention efficient.
Thanks for the link.

Nice … I like the style of the house very much. Like where you have plants growing on that one side of the wall. Nice touch …
Views are going to be breath-taking …
