Is that WATER I hear??!! Is that WATER I hear??!! Is that WATER I hear??!! Click the pictures to enlarge them

Wait … listen … Is that trickling water I hear??!! (NO, I didn’t leave the water hose on—LOL!!!!) To some folks this may not seem like much, but to this Grandma it is VERY EXCITING indeed!!! My very own little water “feature” on our back patio. It is so relaxing to sit on my swing, read and listen to the trickling water. Went to the local nursery and bought Water Hyacinths that float on the water and I think Hubby may buy a fish or two.

I LOVE my back patio … my own little oasis …

First Photo you can see the Water Hyacinths. My understanding is they are supposed to bloom.
Second Photo is the view from my swing … ahhhhhh
Third Photo is the first view of the water barrel as you round the corner into the backyard.

GranT, is that a little solar panel to run your pump?
If so, that is a really neat setup!

Thank you everyone for the kind comments!!

Yes, XO those are daylilies blooming in that odd little garden … The Stella’s that Damocles’ brought over are growing quite nicely there. Think on him and his family everytime I look at that little garden.

Dini, yes we did order a solar panel for this “water barrel”. Originally we had thought about putting a water feature out in the little circle garden that OX was referring to and you can see from the second photo. And we didn’t want to run electricity all the way out there. So when we found the old looking pump, Hubby went on line and ordered a solar panel. Then, when we found the barrel and I just fell in love with it. But, knew it was too big for what was needed for the center of the Stella. So the more we thought about it, we really wanted something closer so that I/we could enjoy it from my swing. And so goes the story …

Very nice addition.
I wish my garden was as organised as you have yours.

Thanks Bob … It was nice sitting on the patio this afternoon listening to the water trickle. Simple pleasures, I guess.

BUT … LOL!!! Never thought about my garden being “organized”. :-)

What a delightful oasis you have Gran T ….... complete with a solar panel! Wonderful indeed. And to sit and listen to the water trickling ….... on your swing …... I’d be so relaxes … amazing what you have done with your new home in such a short time. Congratulations!

Thanks Blooz!! This solar panel is a hoot … there is no battery with it; so any cloud covering or even a shadow and the water “shuts off”—LOL!!!!

I was so excited about your fountain, solar panel …. now going to ask a silly question. Do you have it hooked up to the hose and what turns the hose off? What an invention!

No it is not hooked up to the hose, but I am thinking water hose … maybe you are thinking some other kind of hose, like the pump hose or what I am calling the “plastic tube”.

We filled the Barrel with water, then attached the old fashioned pump to the brim. The old fashioned pump has a long plastic tube that sucks up the water and feeds it into the pump where the water trickled from. (see pic #1). The plastic tube is attached to a motorized water pump that is placed in the bottom of the barrel (under water). It does all the work of sucking the water into the long plastic tube.

The Solar Panel is plugged into the back of the motorized pump and supplies the energy to run the motorized pump.

Now because we did not buy a solar pump with a back up battery … this seems really sensitive to any fluctuation of light. A cloud blocking the sun shuts off the motorized pump, but then comes miraculously back on once the sunlight comes back strong. Had me laughing so bad this afternoon … but really, it does quite well for our purposes. I did find out that the motorized pump shuts off by itself when not in use for a period of time. So each morning I need to wait for the sun to come out and then I have to turn on the motorized pump. Simple enough to do. Runs till dusk …

Hi GrandmaT! Yes, these water hyacinth do bloom a very delicate and pretty light blue flower. They also multiply like crazy. You did a beautiful job with your water feature, I love it. Very ingenious with the solar power, I never would have come up with that idea.

It is so nice and relaxing to have water running in the background. We have it in the river, but we don’t hear it well because of the bush. Hence we put in our fountain.

Different stroke for different folks. My neighbour loves the fountain, and she says it helps her sleep. Across the road, one neighbour makes her neighbour shut off her fountain at night because she claims that she cannot sleep. What can one do? One has to live with their respective neighbour. I am glad that mine likes the sound.

With our power being solar, there is no sound at night (unfortunately). However, next year we will look for a battery to help store the solar energy, then maybe we will have that lovely water sound in the evenings as well. But hey, my mornings till early evenings are just lovely!!! :-)

jroot … We didn’t want to run electricity out into the yard, mainly cuz (again we are not staying). So we thought why not use Solar. It works quite well … our error was not purchasing a backup battery to help store the extra energy. So when there is an overcast day or no sunlight, the pump would still work. All in all we are quite pleased with it.

Hmmmmm Bon, that would be okay with me too!!! I’ll take any water moving so that I can hear it; as I love that sound. :-)

Ah, so the pump in the pond is solar. I thought maybe your entire house was solar as well. That would be an admirable goal, wouldn’t it? .... if only the technology was more refined….
