It’s been a while since I felt something was completed far enough to post as a “Project”.. Always feel like I should be blogging about stuff until it’s far enough along to call done, then posting it here.
Anyway, since I got the 50 Tri-Star day neutral strawberries in Thursday that I ordered, I wanted to get this done and off the list ASAP so that I could get them in the ground.
So today, along with picking up an arcade cabinet that I won on eBay for $15, we also stopped at Lowes to pick up some supplies.
I ended up buying more than I need in all categories. Picked up 6 2×4s (not used), 10 2×6’s (only used 3), 10 bags of topsoil, 10 bags of compost and 5 bags of potting/garden soil.
Once the structure was built I used the topsoil to build up the height of material in the center. I also used cardboard to help prevent slumping of the layers into the bottom most later.
Once the topsoil was mounded up I started on putting the compost + manure in place, allowing 5-6” of space before the top of the 2×6’s. Once everything was filled that far I topped it off with the potting/garden soil.
I was going to build it all square the whole way up but I decided to twist the very top level.. I think it makes it look better.
Anyway, it’s done and out the door.. I’m looking forward to strawberries, at least a few this year. Only thing left is to mulch it, but that will have to wait till I call in a load.

Looks good. I like the way you twisted the top tier. Adds some visual interest.

Thanks.. I actually wished I’d done it like that the whole way up, but I framed it all wrong for that.. Explains why the top level sticks out a little far on just one side.. I just cut all the boards to the same length and then lapped them on the same side, so they’re not really totally square.

Really nice Scott!
Love the “tower” effect!
Cardboard will disappear and if you had not mentioned it, I would not have seen it!
Might even copy the design!

I like that it is just the top layer that is twisted. Very creative!
This is going to be wonderful – and tasty.

Thanks.. :)
I’m hoping they do well since it’s rather late getting them into the ground.. May end up covering them with shade cloth until they get a grip and establish a better root system.

Well, so far the strawberries are doing fine.. It’s been rainy for the last 2 days, which has been wonderful for them.. Have some more rain coming in tomorrow but after that, it’ll be sunny and up in the 80s..
I’m hoping they’ll be nice and large by the end of next month.

How did those berries turn out, Scott? Did you get any off? Were the birds a problem, and if so what do you recommend?

Mmmm… Old thread revival.
Strawberries (both beds) are doing fine.. Though (this) the small bed has had some soil wash out issues along with weeds working their way in.
I few posts back in my blog I posted the work on one of my long raised beds, which will house the strawberries once the season is over. I’ll be moving them into it.
Otherwise, both this current bed (Day Neutrals) and my other large bed (June Bearing) are doing great and are jam packed full of fruit.
Here’s a (slightly dated) picture of the above bed.. Though I removed the top tier, so it’s only two tier.

This is the bed they will be moved to at end of season… Note the weed cloth.
I’ve got 5 3cf bags of potting soil dumped into it now, so it’s good to go. There is enough head room as well that I won’t have issues with adding straw over the plants in the fall.

I love your strawberry bed!!! We had a similar tiered bed years ago which produced quite well until the bindweed and chives moved in. (lol) We have recently redone all the gardens and incorporated a new tiered strawberry bed into the plan. My husband (old farm boy) always “overbuilds” everything—- (i am Not complaining, as it usually works to my benefit…haha) so when I asked for a 5-step X 3 ft long bed, I actually ended up with aprox 6’ X 7’ raised bed that has three 14” X 7’ planting steps off the one long side. I bought 60 plants, but only about 1/3 survived our hard cold winter, I meant to cover them with straw but was too late. It is a challenge to over winter many of these plants in zone 3. Scott do you cover your plants in the winter, and have you experimented with different varieties?
[I don’t have a very reliable internet connection, so posting pictures usually ends in more frustration than postings, but I will try to get a few pictures posted this year and become a little more involved in this garden community]. I try to stop in and see what you are all up to from time to time and really wish I had more time to devote to surfing and blogging, maybe someday…..for now though, we have a home and large yard under construction and enough projects to last until the next ice age.
