We have a place in the Mayacamas Mountains between St. Helena and Santa Rosa, CA. We did not plant a garden the first summer, but by 2006 we got one started. Jan is always scratching in the dirt and I do the heavy lifting.

It gets very cold at our elevation (1400 ft.) and we have a lack of sunlight due to a mountain ridge south of us. We usually are forced into a late start in the spring and have difficulty getting vegetables to mature. Flowers, bushes, plants, etc. must be freeze and deer resistant. Luckily, our main garden area is fenced and protected from the deer, but not from the varmints.

We have issues with moles in the yard, chipmunks in the garden, and who knows what that likes to eat pumpkins and watermelons when they first sprout.
