Since I now have three separate areas in the backyard that are mainly dedicated to veggies and herbs, I’m naming them each after the month that most of their planting was complete.
This space was just added last year, and mostly housed two kinds of pumpkins that didn’t get quite ripe enough as I completed the area and planted rather late. So this year it was planted first, essentially in April, and therefore is doing well (though the broccoli is the only thing that I’ve harvested so far).
The volunteer tomato on the trellis is the furthest along of all my tomatoes, though the Yellow Pear in the “June” Garden may surpass these and ripen earlier just because of their size difference. The flowers along the fence were planted rather haphazardly, and a bit late maybe, so aren’t what I had hoped for yet. And though I think I planted a few Teddy Bear Sunflowers from seeds saved from last year, which are only supposed to get about 3ft tall at the most, at least one of them is sticking up over the fence and doesn’t appear to have reached its apex.
The Veggies & Herbs:
• Leeks (which are only doing so-so)
• Bush Beans (2 kinds, both for dry beans)
• Black Cherry Tomato
• Two volunteer Tomatoes that I don’t yet know the varieties of (but I think one of them is Rutger’s – YAY!)
The Flowers (though not all in bloom yet):
• German Chamomile
• Shasta Daisies
• Bee Balm
• Teddy bear Sunflowers
• Love Lies Bleeding Amaranth
