I know many Gardentenders aren’t US Citizens. However, I wanted to share with you the Eat the View Campaign that is going on now in the states. The campaign is gathering signatures to petition the new president to install a n edible garden at the White House. If you haven’t signed the petition, I encourage you to do so soon. It will be open for just over 4 more days.
You may read more about it and find links to the campaign and petition here: http://www.gardenhelp.org/gardening/victory-garden-at-the-white-house-campaign/

the only way to have people follow you, to believe in you, is to walk the talk instead of talking the walk.
What a great idea!

I can’t recall right this moment who it was, but one of the presidents used to keep some kind of farm animal on the Whitehouse grounds. Another unrelated was Woodrow Wilson.
”President Woodrow Wilson grazed sheep on the White House lawn. The wool from the sheep was sold to raise money for the Red Cross during World War I. The flock included “Old Ike,” a tobacco chewing ram.”
At any rate, the value of an edible garden at the Whitehouse will be worthless unless what is produced would be used.
That said, I’m sure the dozens of highly paid chefs there could make use of it.
As far as it being a symbol of the old “Victory Gardens” of the past, that in itself would make it worth while, so long as people themselves picked up on it. It’s a value which should never have been forgotten.
On the bright side, 2008 had seen the highest raise in edible crop seed sales in a long, long time; up some 25-30% from what I recall.. So now would be a very good time.
I think they should bring back the in print poster propaganda while they’re at it… I wanna pick up a reprint of some of these when I have a few bucks to burn. ;)

What a great idea.
Now if only we could get Prime Minister Harper to do the same thing here in Ottawa at Sussex Drive. That would pull out his niceness for the public to see that he really is a caring guy. LOL
