no previous part Part 1 of Spring is here series no next part

Wow I haven’t been on here in forever, alot has been going on and changing. Our chickens arrived, we’ve built a chicken coop, been planting and digging and transplanting oh my. Andy worked briefly in February with a nursery here in town, and so we have added a few things from there. Namely my new saucer magnolia :D. I’ve put in more rose bushes on the side of the hosue, and so far my black and white garden is just a white garden, but I am pleased with it. This weekend I bought a whole flat of snap dragons and haven’t found there permenant home yet. Lets see…also planted my first gardinia, we’ll see how that goes, added some lambs ear around it, I hope it turns out. As for all of those jiffy pots, well lets just say better luck next year on those. So for now, here are a few pics, hopefully this weekend, I will have time to get back out there, and have more pictures for you.

They are so much fun! They’ll be 3 weeks old on saturday (listen to me…I’m chicken mamma). I got 15 Sex linked Red Star, 5 Golden Lace, 5 buff cochin bantams, 5 buff brahmas. we’ve lost a few due to apparent bad vaccinations at the hatchery, but its def. been a wonderful experience for us being new at this and all. I also forgot to mention that we had 6 inches of snow the week before last. Sounds small to y’all I know, but we shut down work and schools for it. I know you’re laughing, I used to live up in wyoming and there was no such thing as a snow day haha.

You really can’t help it, they do the funniest things, the bantams are hilarious, just off in there own little mini world. The red stars are so personable. I call out chick chick and sit with them and they all come running, fight over the spot in my lap. I’ve honestly never even been around chickens in my life, and I am amazed at how “pet like” they can be, that sounds silly, but I’m a dog and a cat person. This is a whole new ball game for me. We have 22 chicks right now, but andy has enjoyed them so much, he let me know we have 30 more coming. Poe Prarie has turned into Poe Poultry apparently. ;D

this is lucille, last sat. at two weeks old. I’m her favorite.

This is Olivia, the only reason I’ve named any of them, is because these are the ones that always come up to me, and fight over who sits where.

My nephews favorite, Red Face, shes in the picture above the winking chick in the blog, just a baby only 3 days old there.

Awwwwwww!!!!!!!! Sure sounds like you and hubby are in “heaven”. I love the photos!

We have a Cockatiel that we love (never thought I could be fond of a bird!!) and he is FULL of personality … so yes, I can imagine you not only falling in love with these little “guys” but marveling at their individuality.

2 of my 5 chickens have a bald spot on thier back, just in front of their tail feathers…..it looks ‘chalky”

are they molting or do they have a virus, bacteria ? .........went from 4 to 5 eggs a day to 1 egg a day

I love little Redface…although for some reason “she” seems a little he-like. Red, my smartest hen was a red star (Isa Brown in Canada) they are very personable.

Greenthumb, sounds like you could have a few mites wash the area good with soapy water and sprinkle with a little DE…Be sure they have a bit of DE and sand to dust bathe in. If you find mites in the coop paint the roosts and nest boxes with some mineral oil, olive oil or neem oil.

I would also throw a few cloves of chopped garlic for them to peck at as mites don’t stay on hosts that eat garlic and a little Apple cider vinegar in the waterer to boot their immune systems.

These long winters are no fun for chickies.
