Is My Giant Fleeceflower dying? - 4 replies
The last few days I’ve noticed the new foliage from my Giant White Fleeceflower is turning brown. I don’t know what to think. I know we’ve had a couple of nights of ground frost and am wondering if that is what happened. I so much don’t want them to die. Could it have been the frost you think? !http://i70.photobucket.com/...

Growing Annuals from Seed - 1 reply
I don’t seem to have any luck. I bought the soil-less starting median, I have them under the dome until germination but that’s when I run into trouble. They look good, I have them in the light. I even have them under florescent lightbut they kind of fall over and die. So now I’m trying to see if I put them back under the dome i...

Conifer for North Side of House - 4 replies
Isn’t it wonderful that Spring is finally on its way. The north side of my house is plain and drab. It’s also where my septic tank is. The septic bed is on the opposite side of the driveway. There is this large expanse of siding that needs some interest. I want to place two tall, narrow evergreens to add height and fill out the botto...

My husband found this in the lower garden. Any idea what it is? The leaves are almost oak-like but then it has that fruit. What could it be?

Garden Thug - 4 replies
Yarrow. I paid for the seeds, sowed them indoors, coddled and nurtured them and planted them. That was four years ago. They have taken over every bed. I’ve given lots away and still I can’t get any control over them. Oh, they’re pretty when in bloom but when they turn to seed – yuck. UGLY. Nice foliage but when they get a...

Evergreen Question - 2 replies
Can you tell me what is the name of the evergreens in this picture? The fat ones on either side of the house. I really like how they look but I don’t know the name. Also, do they grow like this or do they need to be pruned in that shape?

Tree ID - 6 replies
In Peterborough Ontario there is a magnificent maple tree that I’d never seen before. The inside of the leaf is a regular dark green but the outside is a wonderful chartreuse. what is the name of this maple and where can I buy one? The picture does not do it justice. It is definitely chartreuse on the outside.

Spring Bulbs - How Well Do They Die? - 3 replies
It’s wonderful to have beautiful flowers in early Spring but I find the trouble is after the blossoms die. Leaving the foliage to die slowly is so unattractive. I’m about to put in a big order for bulbs of all kinds since Vessey’s is having a special on Spring bulbs. I would love to have my garden explode with beautiful flower...

Smoke Bush - 6 replies
Only the bottom third of my smokebush has leafed out. Given the bitter winter we had am I to conclude that the rest is winter-kill? If so, should I prune away those parts?

Does anybody know if they are slow to emerge in the Spring? I keep looking for signs of life but except for spotting a little green down by the roots, there is nothing going on.

Early transplanting - Too early? - 3 replies
Last weekend was so nice, wasn’t it? I couldn’t wait. After cleaning up a lot of garden trash I went and dug out two of my fleece-flowers and transplanted them. Now, I’m worried that I killed them. I was careful to dig deep and wide but – could I have killed them? they are dormant right now, aren’t they?

What to plant in front yard - 12 replies
My house faces west. We’re always getting beaten up by heavy winds and in the summer, that sun is a killer. What I would like is a small tree so as not to overwhelm the house. Ideally, one with pretty flowers and lovely foliage so as to throw some shade on the house. If it also has nice fall interest, all the better. Any suggestions?

Important Question re white cedar hedge. - 4 replies
Last year we planted 158 3’ cedar shrubs along the border with our neighbour. To make it more interesting, I sowed cosmos along the same stretch. I regularly fertilized the cedars with their own fertilizer which also benefitted the cosmos. They grew tall and strong, growing 6’ in some places. My husband claimed I was doing a bad t...

Please Identify Bugs on Hydrangea - 2 replies
Yesterday was the first time I’d noticed them. I thought they were bees although strange looking ones. This morning before sunrise I took a tour through the garden and noticed those beasts were still on my hydrangeas but they looked either dead or asleep. I grabbed my camera and took a couple of shots. After some time, they beg...

Eggplant question - 2 replies
I grew them from seed. They had lots of blossoms – though kind of late, I thought. It is now mid August and I still don’t see any eggplants. Shouldn’t I see something by now? Has anyone else grown eggplant from seed?

Something is attacking my tomatoes - 23 replies
Some mornings I go in the veggie garden and see tomatoes on the ground. Usually a bite has been taken out of them and it looks like some of the insides have been sucked out. Whatever it is, it doesn’t eat the whole tomato – just a portion of it – like maybe a third and leaves the rest. The culprit attacks fully ripened and t...

Canning Tomatoes - 10 replies
I’m not sure I’ll have a veggie garden next year. It’s a huge commitment and I’m always fighting something – the elements, the crows, the critters, the bugs. I have better things to do with my time. But maybe I’m just tired of all the work. Anyway, since tomatoes don’t all ripen at the same time and ...
